In particular, the present invention is directed to the detection of prenatal (i.e., in utero) exposure to ethanol. In accordance with the present invention, fatty acid ethyl esters, produced as the by-products of non-oxidative ethanol metabolism are detected in samples such as meconium and cord blood.
