  • Patent number: 5213858
Abstract: The present invention relates to a biodegradable paperboard-based package for various food products. The package utilizes a novel heat-sealable laminate structure wherein the exterior gloss heat-sealable layer is a degradable polymeric resin material such as a polyvinyl alcohol resin or a starch based low density polyethylene polymer resin. Utilization of the material in a novel fashion accelerates the paperboard substrate's degradative properties and tendencies.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 19, 1991
Date of Patent: May 25, 1993
    Assignee: International Paper
Inventors: Cynthia L. Tanner, Charles E. Gibbons
  • Patent number: 5196269
Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel coextrusion coating for paper or paperboard substrates. The coextrusion includes a nonpolar polymer layer and a thin exterior skin layer made up of a nonpolar polymer and a polar copolymer. The addition of the polar polymer improves long term treatment level retention which improves long term wettability for printing and gluing adhesion during package or carton formation.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: March 23, 1993
    Assignee: International Paper Company
Inventors: James M. Kittrell, Charles F. Gibbons, Allan A. Whillock, Joe L. Kinsey, Jr., Cynthia L. Tanner
  • Patent number: 4988546
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved container for food and non-food products. The container utilizes a novel combination of materials to overcome polymer odor-emission problems that detract from the packaged product. The novel material structure includes a polymer flavor/fragrance concentrate which imparts an enhanced fragrance to the product when the container is opened, increasing consumer appeal.

  • Patent number: 4802943
Abstract: The present invention relates to a non-foil composite barrier for an improved container for citrus juices and other liquids. The container utilizes a paperboard barrier laminate for the containment of essential oils and the prevention of losses of vitamin C. Also disclosed is a process of making the laminate. The laminate makes use of an inner barrier layer of a heat-sealable ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer to enhance the barrier properties of the laminate.
