  • Publication number: 20050289060
Abstract: In a secure method of consulting article delivery receipts from a remote computer terminal connected to a management computer center via a telecommunications network, a digital image of each receipt is initially input to a portable terminal that includes a radio interface for transmitting said image to the management computer center. In order to consult the digital image in secure manner from the remote computer terminal, provision is made in said remote computer terminal to use a unique key kSESSION that is different on each consultation in order to decrypt first data E1 generated in the portable terminal from the digital image, said unique key kSESSION itself being the result of the management computer center using one of its own private keys kPRIVNLS to decrypt second data E2 generated in the portable terminal from the unique key kSESSION.

  • Patent number: 6466922
Abstract: A postage meter includes a printing device which is removable by a user of the postage meter. The printing device may be an ink-jet print cartridge including an integral ink supply. When the ink supply is depleted the ink-jet print cartridge must be replaced to enable further printing to be effected. The printing device has electrical contacts which interface with corresponding electrical connections of the postage meter when the printing device is mounted in the postage meter. In order to prevent unauthorized access to the print device, access to the printing device for replacement of the printing device is provided by means of an aperture in a housing of the postage meter and the aperture is closed by a member which can only be unlocked and opened in response to input of a coded signal to the postage meter.

  • Patent number: 5918990
Abstract: A thermal print head has thermal print elements located along an edge of a substrate between two faces thereof. An impression roller resiliently urges a print receiving medium, for example a mail item in a postage meter, into ink transfer engagement with an ink layer of a thermal transfer ink ribbon and urges the ink ribbon into heat transfer engagement with the thermal print elements. The print head is mounted to be adjustable as to location of the line of print elements relative to the impression roller and the angular disposition of the print head. The resiliently pressure exerted by the impression is adjustable. Adjustment of the print head and of the pressure may be effected automatically in response to sensing of compressibility of the print receiving medium.

  • Patent number: 5719775
Abstract: A franking machine is provided with means to communicate with a postal authority station and with sensors response to mis-treatment or mal-function of the franking machine. The machine is operated periodically to establish communication with the postal authority station periodically and if any sensors have been set by mis-treatment or mal-function, a signal indicating mis-treatment or mal-function is transmitted by the franking machine to the postal authority station. The communication may be effected each time the machine is operated to frank a mail item or may be effected less frequently, for example in respect of a franking operation in which a plurality of mail items are franked or each time the machine is powered up.

  • Patent number: 5526271
Abstract: A franking machine is constructed such that only those electronic circuit elements carrying out functions for which there is a need for security are housed in a secure housing. Thus means for accounting and storing accounting data and for controlling a print head to print franking impressions is contained in the secure housing. Other elements commonly housed in the secure housing, such as keyboard and display are located exterior of the secured housing. Security for manual recredit operations is improved by securely operating the print head to print register information before and after recrediting.

  • Patent number: 5367464
Abstract: A system for remote resetting of franking meters is disclosed in which the meters communicate with a central resetting terminal. A transaction identification number (IDN) is generated at the resetting terminal and also at the meter. Initially the IDN's match. The IDN at the terminal is incremented when the terminal sends a recredit signal to the meter and accounts for the recredit amount. The IDN at the meter is incremented when the descending register of the meter is recredited. In response to a recredit request which includes the meter IDN the terminal compares the IDN from the meter with that stored at the terminal. If the IDN's match the terminal recredits the meter with the requested amount. If the comparison indicates that the IDN from the meter was not incremented in the preceding recredit routine, indicating that the meter was not recredited in the preceding routine, the terminal recredits the meter with the amount of the preceding request.

  • Patent number: 5305690
Abstract: A franking machine is disclosed comprising a carriage manually movable along a bed and a print drum carried by the carriage to make rolling engagement with a mail item supported on the bed. A toothed rack extends along the length of the bed and gearing on the carriage meshes with the rack to drive the print drum and an impression roller carried by the carriage. The gearing is arranged such that as the carriage is moved in a forward direction along the bed, a mail item gripped between the print drum and the impression roller is fed along the bed in the reverse direction so that the length of traverse of the carriage, and the length of the bed, is less than the length of the franking impression to be printed.

  • Patent number: 5302825
Abstract: A method of forming a franking impression on a mail item and apparatus for forming the franking impression is disclosed. Material which is switchable from one stable state to another stable state by exposure to light of predetermined wavelength is deposited on the mail item while in one state and a selected region of the deposited material is exposed to light of the predetermined wavelength to effect switching of the selected region to the other state and thereby to represent franking or other secure information.

  • Patent number: 5293465
Abstract: A franking machine is disclosed in which a digital printing device such as a thermal printer or ink jet printer is connected to accounting circuits of the franking machine so as to be controlled thereby to print franking impressions. In order to prevent unauthorised control of the printing device by application of external print signals, print data signals output by the accounting circuit are encrypted by logically combining the signals with pseudo random strings of binary bits. At the printing device the encrypted print data signals are decrypted by logically combining the encrypted print data signals with a corresponding pseudo random string of binary bits to provide print signals to control the printing device. Connections between the decryption circuit and the print head are protected from unauthorised access.

  • Patent number: 5206812
Abstract: A franking machine is provided with a general purpose communication port to enable the machine to communicate with other devices. The general purpose port is configurable by the control circuits of the franking machine to match the communication standard utilized by the device connected to the franking machine. Input of a command to cause the franking machine to carry out an operation causes the control circuit to configure the port to a communication standard appropriate to the selected operation.

  • Patent number: 5128875
Abstract: A franking machine includes an electronic microprocessor having pairs of ports for communication between the microprocessor and other electronic devices comprising memories, a keyboard display device or a real time clock device. One port of each pair is utilized for clock signals and the other port of each pair is utilized for control, address and data signals. The memory devices are normally in an inactive mode and reading or writing of data is initiated by a signal format output by the microprocessor which specifies a device address and a memory location within the device. The communication between the microprocessor and the electronic devices includes the returning of acknowledgement signals from the devices to the microprocessor. In an initialization routine, the receipt of an acknowledgement signal or absence thereof may be utilized to enable the microprocessor to identify which one of a number of versions of a device is installed and to select an appropriate software routine.

  • Patent number: 4933706
Abstract: A franking machine is disclosed in which printing of a franking impression is effected by exposing a layer of micro-capsules containing ink to light to thereby cause hardening of the exposed micro-capsules and then subjecting the layer to pressure to rupture the un-exposed micro-capsules in the presence of a developer with which the ink reacts to become visible. The layer of micro-capsules may be coated on envelopes or label tape during manufacture or by coating means in the franking machine. The developer may be applied as a coating in a similar manner. Alternatively one or both the micro-capsules and the developer may be carried on a transfer film brought into contact under pressure with a mail item after exposure of the film.

  • Patent number: 4917010
Abstract: A franking machine is disclosed which has a thermal printer for printing variable and non-variable information at a single print station. The non-variable information is printed by thermal print elements having a form corresponding to the information pattern and the variable information is printed by arrays of selectable print elements. The elements are preferably heated by passing electric current through the elements. Alternatively, the elements for non-variable information may be heated from a heated substrate.
