Patent number: 6203590Abstract: An evacuation system is provided for removing smoke generated during a surgical procedure performed in a surgical room. The evacuation system includes a pre-filter assembly and a replaceable filter cartridge module disposed in the surgical room to permit replacement of used filter cartridge modules with new filter cartridge modules by personnel within the surgical room. A vacuum generator is disposed outside of the surgical room and includes a vacuum pump for establishing an air flow through the replaceable filter cartridge module. The pre-filter assembly includes an elongate flexible suction hose that is adapted for manipulation into position adjacent the medical procedure. A mechanical connection mechanism enables pre-filter assemblies to be easily replaced between each surgical procedure. Patent number: 5791337Abstract: A sealed ventilation circuit adapter that enables simultaneous patient ventilation and safe tracheal suctioning is embodied to accommodate any of a wide variety of commercially available suction catheters. The adapter comprises a manifold assembly, and a catheter carrier. The manifold assembly may be attached to a patient for an extended period, while the catheter carrier is advantageously constructed as a single procedural use disposable device. The carrier couples with the manifold assembly and functions to effect an introduction of a catheter through a normally closed valve structure carried by the manifold assembly.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1996Date of Patent: August 11, 1998Inventors: Peter W. H. Coles, Randall D. Block, Paul A. Schumann, James LeVoy Sorenson

Patent number: 5785070Abstract: A dual handled walking-assist and uprisal-assist device is disclosed having the handles spaced at a predetermined distance to provide a stable structure for rising from and lowering to a seated position, in addition to serving as a walking aid. The walking- and uprisal-assist device has a structure having a first handle or first pair of handles which are useful whenever a user is in a standing position. A second handle or second pair of handles are spaced a preselected distance from the first handle or handles and at a preselected distance from the bottom of the device. An infirmed user can use the second handle or handles as a grip to push against when the user is rising from a chair. The second handle or handles are connected to one or more load-bearing shafts and the geometrical centers of the handles are positioned relative to the load-bearing shafts to provide a stable structure when used for uprisal and walking.Type: GrantFiled: March 4, 1996Date of Patent: July 28, 1998Assignee: Momentum Medical CorporationInventors: Randall D. Patent number: 5497856Abstract: A foot operated locking brake mechanism for preventing the rotation of a caster wheel supported on an axle within a wheel fork. A pair of support members secured to the legs of the wheel fork extend radially outward of the caster wheel. The legs of a U-shaped operating member are pivotally supported on the support members radially inward of the outer circumference of the caster wheel. A brake pad support arm is pivotally mounted on the support members radially outward of the outer circumference of the caster wheel. A cam follower which is supported between the legs of the U-shaped member engages a cam surface provided on the brake pad support arm when the U-shaped member is pivoted to move the cam follower closer to the caster wheel. When the cam follower is engaged with the cam surface, a brake pad carried by the brake support arm is locked in engagement with the caster wheel tread.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1994Date of Patent: March 12, 1996Assignee: Colson Caster CorporationInventors: Vurl D. Patent number: 5495867Abstract: A dual handled cane having the handles spaced at a predetermined distance to provide excellent uprisal characteristics is disclosed. The cane is a unitary structure having an upper handle which is useful whenever a user is in a standing position. A lower handle is spaced a preselected distance from the upper handle and a preselected distance from the tip of the cane. An infirmed user can use the lower handle as a grip when the user is rising from a chair. The second handle is connected to the shaft of the cane, that is, the straight shaft portion of the cane by a gooseneck wherein both handles are geometrically centered over the load bearing shaft of the cane. A load bearing shaft generally comprises two elements; one, a telescoping lower element which includes the tip of the cane and an upper element into which the lower element slides so that the length of the shaft may be adjusted to fit more comfortably the height of a particular individual.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 1993Date of Patent: March 5, 1996Assignee: Momentum Medical Corp.Inventor: Randall D. Patent number: 5402864Abstract: A castor braking mechanism for use on a castor having a wheel, the hub of which wheel is mounted on an axle between a pair of legs. The braking mechanism includes a cam member mounted between one side of the wheel hub and a leg, and a cam engaging member located on the outside of the same leg. The axle passes through hole in both members. Retaining members at each end of the axle are spaced apart, such that when the cam member and the cam engaging member are in a first position with respect to each other the wheel is free to rotate, and when the cam engaging member is rotated in either direction with respect to the cam member, they are forced apart from each other so as to apply an axial force between the retaining means to the hub of the wheel to impede or prevent rotation of the wheel.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1994Date of Patent: April 4, 1995Assignee: Colson Caster CorporationInventors: Vurl D. Patent number: 4438771Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed for detecting the cessation of movement of a body by detecting the voltage produced by the movement of the charge on said body because of the body's movement. This is accomplished by a passive contactless conductive pad which is spaced from the body and in which a potential is induced by the movement of the body through the movement of the charge on the body. This potential is amplified and an alarm indication device responds to the amplified potential to produce an alarm when the output of the amplifier is below a predetermined value or for a predetermined period of time. This device enables the unattended monitoring of breathing and heart functioning for long periods of time.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1982Date of Patent: March 27, 1984Assignee: University of Virginia Alumni Patents FoundationInventors: W.
