Patent number: 5259769Abstract: An electrical connector includes a dielectric body mounting a flexible leaf-type terminal which has a spring contact portion for surface engagement with a contact element of a mating connector component. The body includes a partition-like wall defining oppositely facing sides and an end face thereof. The terminal is fixed adjacent one side of the wall, and the spring contact portion of the terminal is bowed around the end face of the wall and spaced therefrom for flexingly surface engaging the contact element of the mating connector component in a given direction generally perpendicular to the end face of the wall. The terminal has a distal end at the end of the spring contact portion located in a recessed area in the other side of the wall. The distal end thereby preloads the spring contact portion and resists flexing of the spring contact portion if engaged in a direction generally toward the one side of the wall.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 1992Date of Patent: November 9, 1993Assignee: Molex IncorporatedInventors: Tom Cruise, Mathew Wilhite, Niallo D. Patent number: 5141395Abstract: A stator vane liner assembly includes seal keys supported in slots in the ends of vane liner segments in an engine casing. Stationary vanes supported in the liner segments for directing an engine airflow are urged against the keys by the engine airflow gas loads. The seal keys engage the ends of adjacent vane liners for sealing, and prevent further motion of the vanes with respect to the liner segments due to the engine airflow gas loads. Secondary seal means can be slidably captured between the seal key and vane liner segment to prevent axial and radial leakage around the seal key. The liner assembly reduces leakage of engine airflow and helps to isolate the engine casing from the thermal effects of leakage of engine airflow.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1991Date of Patent: August 25, 1992Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Michael D. Carroll, Mark S. Rocklin, Roger E. Maloon

Patent number: 4762920Abstract: A process for the preparation of penicillanic acid 1,1-dioxide and esters thereof readily hydrolyzable in vivo, which comprises oxidation of a 6,6-dihalopenicillanic acid, or an ester thereof readily hydrolyzable in vivo, to the corresponding 6,6-dihalopenicillanic acid 1,1-dioxide or ester thereof, followed by dehalogenation (e.g. by hydrogenolysis). The 6,6-dihalopenicillanic acid 1,1-dioxides and esters thereof readily hydrolyzable in vivo are novel intermediates. Penicillanic acid 1,1-dioxide, and esters thereof readily hydrolyzable in vivo, are known compounds which are useful as beta-lactamase inhibitors and for enhancing the effectiveness of certain beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g. the penicillins) in the treatement of bacterial infections in mammals, particularly humans.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1986Date of Patent: August 9, 1988Assignee: Pfizer, Inc.Inventors: Ronnie D. Patent number: 4686592Abstract: An improved disk drive device including a disk of recording media and having a central aperture, which disk is supported at its periphery by a cylindrical housing. A spindle motor is positioned at the outer periphery of the housing along with a single set of bearings, also positioned at the other periphery of the housing, to cause rotation of the housing relative to a base. A stepper motor is positioned with its shaft protruding through the center aperture of the disk and directly coupled to read/write heads. The stepper motor shaft is positioned parallel to but offset from the center line of the disk so that rotation of the stepper motor shaft causes the read/write heads to translate along an arc across the surface of the disk. The arc extends from the inner track of the disk to the outer track thereof.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1985Date of Patent: August 11, 1987Inventors: Thomas D. Carroll, Clifford B. Akers

Patent number: 4195798Abstract: A reel launcher having a saddle operationally deployable beneath an aircr for carrying and towing an aerial tow target. The tow target is connected to the tow cable by an adapter which includes a notch for registration with a latch in the launcher. The adapter includes a nose section and one of a plurality of end fittings specially formed to engage a corresponding connection in different tow targets. The length of the adapter is adjustable by a threaded connection between the nose section and the end fitting which may be locked with the notch in proper alignment by a slot, key and notch arrangement between the two ends. Thus, a single nose section operable with a launcher may be used with different end fittings and tow targets with no other modifications.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 1978Date of Patent: April 1, 1980Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: G. Costantino, D. Carroll

Patent number: 4036622Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for protecting the apparatus employed in the formation of glass fibers, glass fiber strands and the products produced therein. The method involves continuously contacting the moving glass fiber strand during the forming thereof from glass fibers with a strand detecting means provided between a gathering shoe and winding means and automatically deactivating the winding means and spiral assembly associated therewith in addition to protecting the application surface of the applicator when a loss of contact of strand between the gathering shoe and winding means is detected. This deactivation of the winding means and spiral prevents damage from glass beads which may form after a strand breakout in a glass fiber forming operation. The strand breakout is detected by means located between the gathering shoe and collet.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1976Date of Patent: July 19, 1977Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventors: Thomas D. Patent number: 3970319Abstract: A porous seal element usable as a blade tip seal in a turbomachine or as an element of a labyrinth seal is made up of a large number of strips disposed edgewise to the sealing face of the element and extending in the direction of relative movement of the seal elements. The strips have grooves extending across the strip for discharge of a cooling fluid such as air. The presence of the grooves provides a low density structure at the seal face of the seal element which may be abraded if there is rubbing contact and provides for metering of coolant at the rear face of the seal element. The seal element is fabricated by etching sheets so each sheet defines a number of parallel strips joined by weak ties and with the grooves extending across the strips; stacking the sheets and bonding them together; and then separating the bonded structure at the weak ties so that each stack of strips defines a seal element.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1974Date of Patent: July 20, 1976Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Charles D. Carroll, George B. Meginnis
