  • Patent number: 11795781
Abstract: A tool, e.g. a downhole tool, utilizes at least one actuator which may be actuated rapidly between positions during operation of the tool. The actuator is moved via flow of an actuating fluid controlled by a main valve which, in turn, is controlled via a pilot valve. The pilot valve is operated to selectively control flow of the actuating fluid to the main valve so as to shift the main valve between desired operational positions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 11, 2021
Date of Patent: October 24, 2023
    Assignee: SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION
Inventors: Edward George Parkin, Michael Pearce, Julien Steimetz, Jonathan D. Marshall, D. Peter Johnson, Clint William Philbrick

  • Publication number: 20180163890
Abstract: A valve may comprise a plug receivable by a seat wherein both the plug and seat comprise superhard material. The valve may be designed and operated in such a way so as not to fracture the superhard material as the plug is received by the seat. Specifically, the valve may comprise a magnetic core translatable within at least one solenoid. Kinetic energy from the translating magnetic core may be transmitted to the plug when the magnetic core impacts an anvil causing the plug to move relative to the seat. The plug may be moved incrementally relative to the seat by a plurality of impacts of the magnetic core.

  • Publication number: 20180163891
Abstract: A valve may use fluid pressure to provide bistability to the valve by creating two regions that experience different pressures on one surface of the valve. The two regions may change in size relative to each other as the surface approaches another surface thus changing the combined pressures experienced by the regions. A velocity of fluid flow may increase as it passes one of the regions thus reducing pressure to that region. Additionally, an eddy current may form adjacent another one of the regions thus reducing pressure to that region. Consequently, the valve may be urged open when open and urged closed when closed.

  • Publication number: 20180016850
Abstract: A downhole drill bit, of the type used to bore into the earth when searching for or extracting subterranean resources, may comprise a working face opposite an attachment end and an opening passing from the attachment end through to the working face. A protrusion on one end of a bottom hole assembly may extend through the opening and be exposed at the working face when the drill bit is attached to the end of the bottom hole assembly. In various embodiments the exposed portion of the protrusion may house conduits or nozzles for handling fluids; sensors, transmitters or wires for handling electrical signals; or mechanical hammers, motors or cutters for degrading an earthen formation. In this way, the protrusion may bring such elements from the bottom hole assembly to the working face of the drill bit.
