Patent number: 6877936Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing conical holes in a workpiece by using a substantially cylindrical cutting tool having a cutting head diameter essentially smaller than the top and bottom diameter of the hole to be formed. The method comprises the steps of positioning the longitudinal center axis of the cutting tool at an angle, which is offset from a normal to a flat surface of the workpiece such that the inclination of the longitudinal axis of the cutting tool substantially corresponds to the desired inclination of the wall of the conical hole to be formed, rotating the cutting tool about its longitudinal center axis, moving the cutting tool in a circular path about a principal axis corresponding to the longitudinal center axis of the hole to be machined, and feeding the cutting tool in its longitudinal direction towards and into the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2002Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Novator ABInventors: Dag G. Patent number: 6007281Abstract: A method of producing a hole in a fiber reinforced composite material workpiece includes the step of providing a cutting tool having a shaft, a cutting head, and an axis of rotation. The cutting head has a diameter which is substantially smaller than the diameter of the hole that is produced. The shaft has a diameter which is substantially smaller than the diameter of the cutting head. The cutting head has a height which is substantially smaller than the depth of the hole that is produced. The cutting tool is oriented such that the axis of rotation of the cutting tool is substantially orthogonal to the surface of the workpiece.
