  • Patent number: 6978137
Abstract: A method and system for providing a handoff trigger in a wireless communication system. A mobile handoff prediction is generated with a mobile node. At least one handoff prediction is generated with at least one access network within radio range of the mobile node. The mobile handoff prediction and the at least one network handoff prediction are transmitted to a network control server. A handoff is initiated if the mobile handoff prediction and a respective one of the at least one handoff predictions match.

  • Patent number: 6832087
Abstract: The present invention provides a tunnel-based IP handoff process that can minimize the handoff latency associated with the standard Mobile IP registration. In the present invention, when neighboring nodes are detected, these detected nodes are identified as candidate nodes. Detection of just the existence of neighboring nodes should be possible even in situations where these neighboring nodes use different access technologies. For instance, pilot beacon signals may be taken as indication of the existence of candidate nodes although it may be impossible to compare them quantitatively if the beacon signals emanate from different access technologies. As soon as candidate nodes are identified, tunnels are established between the source node and the candidate nodes. The tunnels are used to forward data to the mobile node after a communication link between the mobile node and the source node goes down.

  • Publication number: 20040111519
Abstract: A network system includes a network edge point configured to provide a terminal with access to a network. The network edge point includes a security policy associated with the terminal, and controls communications between the network and the terminal according to the security policy. The security policy may include a personal filter downloaded from the terminal, a service filter downloaded from a service policy server, and/or a domain filter downloaded from a domain policy server. The terminal may access the network through a second network edge point. The second network edge point may download one or more of the filters from the first network edge point, and control communications between the network and the terminal according to the security policy.

  • Publication number: 20040105412
Abstract: A communications protocol in a system such as an IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN multi-hop system providing transmission scheduling information is disclosed. The transmission scheduling is formatted within a CF-Poll+Data+SIPS data frame transmitted by the point coordinator (PC) which may be any one of the access point (AP) nodes transmitting in turn as dictated by the scheduling parameters within the scheduling information parameter set (SIPS). The SIPS comprises an offset field, the time left for the presently functioning PC; a delay field, where an AP delays functioning as a PC; and the interval field, the time allowed for an AP to function as a PC. The subsequent scheduling of assigned transmission slots by providing boundaries for the transmission frames through SIPS eliminates collisions resulting from multiple units transmitting simultaneously, thereby supporting interactive media and voice communications on WLAN multi-hop systems.

  • Publication number: 20030148756
Abstract: The present invention relates to a reception notification control method in which an information server that stores information addressed to reception terminals and performs reception notification, via a network apparatus, on each of the reception terminals to which the information stored in the information server is addressed. After receiving, via the network apparatus, a predetermined connection request from a reception terminal to which stored information is addressed, the information server performs the reception notification on the reception terminal.

  • Publication number: 20030143999
Abstract: In a telecommunication system, paging areas may be automatically reconfigured as required. Paging areas can be adaptively reconfigured in accordance with changes in movement traffic of mobile hosts. The system and method work under a constraint that only a limited number of area IDs are permitted for each paging unit area. Also, the system and method work over heterogeneous access networks. Thus, according to the presently disclosed embodiments, paging areas reconfigure themselves according to changes in movement traffic of mobile hosts.

  • Publication number: 20030145092
Abstract: Apparatuses and methods are disclosed herein for implementing dormant mode with paging in a WLAN. Power savings in the computing device and reduction in traffic across the network are achieved by requiring a computing device to inform the WLAN of its location only when it crosses a paging area boundary or is to receive IP traffic. Dormant mode with paging is implemented in a protocol that supports dormant functionality and paging functionality but does not itself provide methods or standards for implementing such functionality, such as the IEEE 802.11. The methods and apparatuses disclosed herein provide the methods needed to implement dormant mode with paging in such a protocol. Generally, the methods and apparatuses for implementing dormant mode with paging basically include (1) establishing paging areas; (2) communicating access group information to a computing device; and (3) locating a computing device.

  • Publication number: 20030119508
Abstract: A method and system for providing an adaptive IP handoff triggering system for a wireless communication system that consists of either the same or heterogeneous wireless access technologies. A mobile node is notified of at least one pre-trigger timing parameter by a current access network. At least one variable handoff threshold is constructed with the mobile node based on the at least one pre-trigger timing parameter. An IP handoff is then initiated to a candidate access network when pilot beacon signal strength of the mobile node reaches the variable handoff threshold.

  • Publication number: 20030104814
Abstract: In the present invention, a tunnel is set up between two mobility serving nodes, source and target nodes. The tunnel is used for communication between a mobile node and the source node after the mobile node completes an L2 handoff from the source node to the target node but before completing the standard Mobile IP L3 registration process or undergoing IP routing update with the target node. The tunnel may be set up either before or after the mobile node completes the L2 handoff from the source node to the target node. Also, the tunnel may be set up by a trigger that is generated either externally or internally of the mobile node.

  • Publication number: 20030087646
Abstract: A geographically adjacent access router discovery system discovers geographically adjacent access routers through a distributed process in which mobile node(s) associated with a current access router may receive beacon signals from geographically adjacent access points. A link layer ID included in the beacon signals may be used by the system to identify corresponding geographically adjacent access routers. Network layer addresses of geographically adjacent access routers may be mapped to corresponding link layer IDs and, cached by the system. The cache may be used to identify a network layer address from the link layer ID received in a beacon signal.
