  • Patent number: 5409337
Abstract: A seal assembly (21) is disclosed for use with a housing (H) which defines a fluid chamber (C) and a threaded opening (O). In threaded engagement with the opening is a threaded portion (13) of a device such as a sensor assembly (11 ). The housing defines a counterbore (CB) disposed axially between the threaded opening (O) and an external surface (S). The seal assembly (21) includes a metal support member (23) including a cylindrical portion (27) having inner (33) and outer (35) portions of elastomeric sealing material. The seal assembly is pressed into the counterbore and, by means of the interference fit therebetween, may be permanently retained therein. As the member is threaded into the opening, the underside (16) of the head (15) deforms a sealing lip (39) radially inward into engagement with the threaded portion (13).

  • Patent number: 5199311
Abstract: An auxiliary transmission section (14) shift control system (230) method is provided which includes control members (246) to prevent auxiliary section synchronized clutch (92, 128) damage if the main transmission section (12) is engaged during an auxiliary section shift. Upon sensing (254, 256) synchronized jaw clutch assembly blocked position during a shift into the auxiliary section high-speed ratio, the force used to engage the high speed ratio is gradually reduced from a first (p*a.sub.224) to a considerably lower second (p*(a.sub.224 -a.sub.222)) level.

  • Patent number: 5157963
Abstract: A procedure for qualifying a proposed synthetic lubricant includes: (1) compatibility testing the proposed lubricant with previously approved synthetic lubricants; (2) stability testing the lubricant for thermal oxidation by testing the lubricant in a heated gear box; (3) corrosion testing the proposed lubricant by a copper strip tarnish test; (4) field testing the proposed lubricant to evaluate the ability of the lubricant to withstand extended drain intervals while still performing its function; and analyzing all of the results of those tests. In another embodiment, the lubricant furthermore undergoes a seal life test to evaluate the appearance of various covers and seals for degradation due to long term exposure to the lubricant.
