  • Patent number: 11634967
Abstract: Methods for more reliably cementing and remediating oil and gas wells by plastically expanding the diameter of the wellbore casing at select locations along the wellbore to control fluid flow in the micro-annular leak paths formed in the casing annulus between the casing and cement sheath, or between the casing and wellbore. Such methods do not require pre-placement of casing packers or prediction of potential leak points of the casing annulus. In cementing operations, casing expansion can be performed at strategic locations along the wellbore to eliminate annular leak paths that permit detrimental flow, direct the flow of cement to the desired portions of the wellbore, and prevent the flow of cement to oil producing formations. In instances of inter-zonal communication between subterranean formations, casing expansion can be performed at location(s) between the formations to mitigate or prevent inter-zonal communication via annular leak paths in the casing annulus.

  • Patent number: 11585178
Abstract: A tool is provided for expanding the casing at one or more locations for arresting surface casing vent flow in an abandoned well. A setting tool is run into the bore having an expansion element supported thereon. The setting tool imparts a large axial force to radially expand the expansion element for plastically deforming the casing. A single use, pleated ring crushable expansion element can be actuated and left downhole. The pleated ring tool can be pre-charged with a highly viscous fluid, semi solid for transport, but plastic under load. A multi-use expansion element can be actuated, released, moved and actuated again at successive locations.

  • Patent number: 10329869
Abstract: A tool is provided for use in closing and sealing the cased bore of a well to be abandoned. The tool is run into the bore, the tool having a stack of pleated rings slidably mounted on a tubular mandrel. The tool is engaged with the casing and a charge of hot asphaltic sealant is discharged from a conveyed container to flood the stack and tool annulus. The stack is compressed axially to partly flatten and radially expand the rings to frictionally engage the surrounding casing, the rings and sealant sealing the bore. Further, the rings can expand the heated casing for sealing casing/cement interfaces. The sealant solidifies and creates an impermeable mass sealing against surfaces of the mandrel, stack and casing.

  • Publication number: 20190153806
Abstract: A tool is provided for diagnosing the downhole source of a surface casing vent flow for remediation of an abandoned well. The tool is run into the bore, the tool having a stack of pleated rings slidably mounted on a tubular mandrel. The tool is actuated. One end of the stack is set to engage with the casing and the stack is compressed axially to expand the pleated rings expand the casing for diminishing casing/cement micro-cracks. If surface casing vent flow is reduced, the downhole source is identified for remediation and, if not reduced, the tool is released, traversed uphole and actuated again.

  • Patent number: 8864412
Abstract: A containment chamber is constructed by excavating a pit at the site of oil-contaminated sand and lining the pit with an impermeable, heat-resistant, flexible plastic liner. An array of spaced apart heating assemblies is positioned to cover the bottom of the chamber. Each heating assembly may include an elongate linear electric resistance heater positioned within a tubular slotted sand screen. The containment chamber is filled with a charge of contaminated sand. Solvent, such as diesel fuel, is pumped into the elongate passageways defined between the heaters and screens. The heaters are actuated to vaporize the solvent, which moves through the screen slots and convectively permeates the charge. The vapor transfers heat to the oily sand and condenses. Condensed solvent and heated oil drain and are recovered from the chamber.

  • Publication number: 20070200299
Abstract: The present invention relates to a spring element. The spring element includes a metal ring with a central aperture and radial pleats formed on the metal ring. The radial pleats flatten when pressure is applied axially to compress the ring such that the metal ring increases in effective diameter. The seal element may be used to radially seal an annular bore.

  • Publication number: 20070199693
Abstract: The present invention relates to a seal element for a wellbore which includes a support member, a bag positioned on the support member and a eutectic material positionable in the bag. The bag may be axially compressed and axially extended along the support member thereby permitting sealing and unsealing of an annulus in a wellbore. The eutectic material may be a phase changing salt.
