  • Publication number: 20090261205
Abstract: An airborne mobile platform may have a wing having a length and a chord wise dimension, and a plurality of elongated structural components extending span-wise along the length of the wing. The elongated structural components may each have a localized hinge area. A device may be used for manipulating the elongated structural component to position the localized hinge area to selectively change a hinge line of the wing in response to an airflow over the wing.

  • Publication number: 20090261204
Abstract: A variable porosity system for an aircraft includes a first layer, a second layer and an actuator mechanism. Each of the first and second layers has at least one pore and are slidable relative to one another. The actuator mechanism is operative to move the first and second layers relative to one another such that the pores are movable into and out of at least partial alignment with one another to allow for fluid communication therebetween. At least one of the first and second layers is substantially continuous with an outer mold line surface of an aerodynamic member such as an aircraft wing. The actuator mechanism is configured to modulate the frequency of the opening and closing of the pores with respect to flight conditions of an aircraft.

  • Publication number: 20090200430
Abstract: Circuits and methods for use on a mobile platform including a flight control system, a structure, an aerodynamic surface, and an actuator operatively coupled to the surface to control the surface. The circuit includes a first and a second input, a summing element, and an output. The first input accepts commands from the flight control system while the second input accepts a vibration signal from the structure. The summing element communicates with the inputs and sums the signal and the command. In turn, the summing element controls the actuator with the summed signal and command.

  • Patent number: 7464903
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for hybrid actuation and suppressing vibration are disclosed. In one embodiment, a hybrid actuator includes a first actuator and a second actuator linked to move a component a combined actuation distance. The first actuator may include a hydraulic piston, and the second actuator may include a piezo-electric actuator. In another embodiment, the first actuator is activated within a first frequency range, and the second actuator is activated within a second frequency range. In another aspect, a method is provided combining a first actuation movement and a second actuation movement. In another embodiment, a system is provided for suppressing movement of a component including a combination of actuators. In a further embodiment, an aircraft is provided with hybrid motion suppression including a first actuator and a second actuator linked to activate a control surface.

  • Patent number: 7028948
Abstract: A morphing airfoil system includes a first airfoil having a first root, first span, first chord, and first tip. The first airfoil is attachable to an aircraft near the first root. A second airfoil has a second root, second span, second chord, and second tip. The second airfoil is attachable to the aircraft near the first root. At least one moveable connection is attached to at least one of the first airfoil and the second airfoil near their respective roots. The moveable connection is arranged to permit movement of at least one of the first airfoil and the second airfoil from a first position with their tips near each other to a second position with their tips spaced apart from each other. An endplate may connect the two airfoils near their respective tips.

  • Patent number: 6588709
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for varying a wall skin to alter airflow over the skin. The apparatus has a first and second end-plates, a plurality of flexible rods are arranged substantially parallel to substantially define a plane, each flexible rod has a mid-point and first and second ends secured to the first and second end-plates respectively. Each mounting structure is slidingly attached to the flexible rods between the mid-point and each end-plate, proximate to the end. An elastomer envelops the rods to form a flexible skin. A plurality of shape memory alloy rods are arranged parallel to and define a plane and having each end secured to an end-plate, the plurality of shape memory alloy rods being contractible when heated such that upon contraction the plurality of shape memory allow rods will buckle the plurality of flexible rods and the flexible skin to alter airflow over the skin.
