    Abstract: An opportunistic modem (OM) system receives user data at an input port and transmits a modem output signal at an output port. In one aspect the data is initially transmitted over a first carrier in the modem output signal having a first frequency and bandwidth. Subsequently a second carrier having a second frequency and bandwidth is established, initially used to transmit pilot data, and then the user data is divided between the first and second carriers in the modem output signal. In another aspect the data is initially transmitted over a first and a second carrier in the modem output signal having respective first and second frequencies and bandwidths. Subsequently the second carrier is used to transmit pilot data for a period time. After the period of time the second carrier is de-established. In another aspect establishment and de-establishment of carriers is performed in response to detected interference.

    Abstract: A touch sensing direct input data display device is described. The data display screen is directly and solely supported within a housing by stiff springs having essentially uniaxial freedom of motion. Strain gauge sensors are applied directly to the springs and are connected in a full Wheatstone bridge sensing circuit. The outputs of the sensors are fed to a calculating and processing device for calculaating the X, Y and Z coordinate information relative to the point on the face of the display which has been pushed or touched. The Z component is of total force and the X any Y components give the two dimensional location for the application of the force measured in the Z axis. The stiff springs allow very little deflection to occur under normal touch imposed fores on the display screen. They permit essentially uniaxial motion only in the Z axis.

    Abstract: A touch sensing display apparatus having improved electrical signal processing is described. A plurality of signal threshold comparison levels are employed by the electronic signal calculating and processing unit to identify actual touch signals and to exclude extraneous vibration and offset signal components. Static thresholds of comparison are utilized at lower signal levels and a dynamic, signal tracking threshold is utilized at higher signal levels. The apparatus is particularly effective for use in designs employing a suspended CRT display or other display device in which the screen of the display device is directly touched by a user to record selections of information presented or to input graphical or handwritten information.

    Abstract: A low battery voltage indicator is for use with remote control keyboards which are not linked by a cable to a power supply. Such keyboards contain their own power and are widely used. Remote keyboards that are infra red linked to personal computers are widely available. Similarly, remote control TV channel selectors utilizing infra red links are extensively used and sold. A majority of these devices utilize a battery to power the transmitter for the infra red communication link from the remote unit to the base unit. This is an improved low voltage indicator circuit and technique that utilizes the infra red link and the key encoding circuits of the keyboard to transmit to the base station a key code indicative of the fact that low battery voltage exists. At the base station, the key code is received and is looked up in a table that identifies the key code as a low battery voltage indication. This causes the base station to flash a low battery voltage warning message on the display screen.
