  • Patent number: 11717195
Abstract: The present invention relates to systems and methods for assessing brain health and detecting neurological conditions. The invention more particularly relates to systems and methods for diagnosing neurological conditions and analyzing rain health from analysis of a biological fluid sample, such as a saliva sample, that looks for and determines the significance of peripheral markers of blood-brain barrier disruption. The present invention further provides a diagnostic system and method with a higher negative predictive value of brain injury than currently known tests are able to provide, so as to reduce the need for computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging scans to affirmatively determine that brain or cerebrovascular injury has not occurred, and thus to improve suspected brain injury patient health care while reducing the expense of such care.

  • Publication number: 20210361769
Abstract: Treatment of subjects experiencing cerebral ischemia is improved when the treatment employs a thrombolytic and an inhibitor against vascular endothelial growth factor receptor signal transduction (VEGF-RST) at a reduced, low dosage compared to that used to treat cancer patients. The treatment is also improved to permit point-of-care use by formulating protein drugs for long term stability at room temperature, providing doses appropriate for the method, and by combining the therapeutic agents with a point-of-care diagnostic for blood brain barrier integrity.

  • Publication number: 20140086827
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method of assessing blood brain barrier permeability in an individual comprising selectively or specifically detecting a level of S 100BB homodimer in a sample of the individual, and comparing the level of S 100BB homodimer in the sample to a level of S 100B a control. The invention is also directed to methods of determining the effectiveness of a treatment for a neurological disorder wherein blood-brain barrier permeability is present in an individual in need thereof comprising detecting a level of S100B in a sample of the individual undergoing the treatment, and comparing the level of S 100B in the sample to the level of S100B in a sample from the individual obtained prior to treatment.

  • Patent number: 7144708
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a peripheral marker or markers of blood barrier integrity and methods of using same in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of a variety of diseases. The peripheral marker(s) of the present invention are particularly useful in the differential diagnosis of diseased states. The preferred embodiments of the present invention relate to methods, compositions, kits, and assays useful in determining the integrity or permeability of either a blood CSF barrier or a blood brain barrier. The various embodiments of the present invention can be used to identify subjects at risk for developing a disease associated with increased permeability of the blood brain barrier, as well as to provide insight on the ability of an agent or agents to pass through the blood brain barrier.

  • Patent number: 6667172
Abstract: A cell and tissue culture modeling device comprising a housing having an interior chamber, an inlet port in fluid communication with the internal chamber, an outlet port in fluid communication with the internal chamber, a plurality of hollow fibers disposed within the interior chamber and traversing the length of the housing between the inlet port and the outlet port. Each of the plurality of hollow fibers has an interior defining an intracapillary space and the interior chamber defines an extracapillary space unoccupied by the plurality of hollow fibers. To access the extracapillary space of the device, a portion of the housing is removable. The device can be used to conduct permeability, drug efficacy, and gene expression studies.
