  • Patent number: 10648405
Abstract: Systems, apparatuses, and methods disclosed provide for estimating the remaining life for an engine. The method includes determining a correlation between a quantity of burned fuel and a level of wear of a piston ring for an engine. The level of wear of the piston ring is indicative of a remaining life of the engine. The method also includes determining a current quantity of burned fuel by the engine, and determining the remaining life of the engine based on the correlation and the current quantity of burned fuel by the engine.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 26, 2018
Date of Patent: May 12, 2020
    Assignee: Cummins Inc.
Inventors: Douglas C. Doup, Dan E. Richardson, Jeffrey K. Colvill, Stephen W. Brooks

  • Patent number: 9464591
Abstract: A cylinder liner sealing arrangement for an internal combustion engine including a cylinder block having cylinder bores, a cylinder head, a cylinder liner within each cylinder bore and a circumferential cut-out formed in the upper and outer surfaces of the cylinder liner. A circular sealing ring is positioned in the circumferential cut-out with the sealing ring contacting at least the cylinder block and the cylinder liner to form a coolant seal therebetween. The sealing ring includes a seal enhancing configuration formed on at least an outer circumferential surface of the sealing ring with the seal enhancing configuration including at least one of an arcuate portion of a “D” ring seal or a plurality of circumferentially extending ribs.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 9, 2013
Date of Patent: October 11, 2016
    Assignee: Cummins Intellectual Properties, Inc.
Inventors: Joseph Worthington, Terry M. Shaw, David Genter, Dan E. Richardson, Ian McGiffen, Mark G. Luehrmann, Keith Gunter
