  • Patent number: 6735953
Abstract: An environmental control system includes a turbomachine and an air cycle machine that is driven by shaft power of the turbomachine. The turbomachine includes a compressor, which supplies compressed bleed air to the air cycle machine. Ambient air is compressed by the compressor, and heat of compression is removed by an air-to-air heat exchanger, which envelops the turbomachine. The cooled, compressed air is expanded in the air cycle machine to produce a stream of cooled, conditioned air. Ambient air used by the air-to-air heat exchanger to cool the compressed bleed air is drawn into the turbomachine's exhaust by an eductor.

  • Patent number: 5887445
Abstract: A two spool environmental control system includes a low pressure spool subsystem having a low pressure turbine. A high pressure spool subsystem is in air flow communication with the low pressure spool subsystem, while the high pressure spool subsystem is capable of conditioning compressed air prior to the low pressure spool subsystem conditioning the compressed air. The high pressure spool subsystem includes a high pressure turbine which is mechanically operable independently of the low pressure turbine.

  • Patent number: 5442905
Abstract: An environmental control system has an air cycle machine that includes a compressor, a cooling turbine, a motor/generator, and a power turbine all mounted on a single shaft. The power turbine receives bleed air from the aircraft's engine and has a variable geometry inlet nozzle that adjusts the air flow rate therethrough without significant throttling. Downstream of the nozzle the power turbine extracts the expansion energy from the bleed air while cooling it. This is used to drive the other components of the air cycle machine, and in particular the motor/generator which generates electricity.

  • Patent number: 5343692
Abstract: An apparatus and method of providing an Environmental Control System (ECS) for use in conjunction with a turbine engine power plant, to deliver a flow of purified, conditioned air to an enclosed space, such as an aircraft cabin. The ECS includes contaminate neutralization means to neutralize airborne chemical and biological agents.

  • Patent number: 5014518
Abstract: An air cycle machine for use within an Environmental Control System (ECS) operating in conjunction with a turbine engine. The air cycle machine includes two turbines commonly mounted on a shaft with a compressor. The air cycle machine is designed to directly receive high temperature, high pressure bleed air from the turbine engine and maximize energy extraction and utilization of the bleed air.

  • Patent number: 4967565
Abstract: An advanced Environmental Control System (ECS) for use in conjunction with a turbine engine to provide conditioned, pressurized air to an enclosed space such as an aircraft cabin, as well as cooling capacity for the aircraft avionics. The ECS features a dual turbine air cycle machine to minimize the amount of bleed air or power required from the turbine engine.
