    Abstract: Apparatus and methods for providing x-rays to electronic devices such as portable electronic devices for x-ray fluorescence analysis are described. The apparatus includes a portable XRF device containing an x-ray source and an x-ray detector that are proximate one another, e.g., within the same housing. The x-ray source is shielded so that x-rays that could potentially interfere with the operation of the x-ray detector are reduced or eliminated.
