    Abstract: There is provided a method and apparatus for allocating transmission resources in a wireless network in which some of the terminals communicate with the base station by exchanging communication frames that are compatible with a first communication protocol while other terminals receive communications from the base station that are compatible with a second communication protocol by using non-standardized communication frames or communication frames that are compatible with another standardized protocol. The base station transmits a plurality of frames, some of which are compatible with the first communication protocol while others—with the second communication protocol.

The method comprises: associating a pilot sequence with operative cells; providing a receiver with information to allow estimation of the pilot sequence by a respective transmitter; providing the receiver with information to allow estimation of pilot sequences associated with other transmitters communicating with other receivers located at the geographical proximity of that receiver; estimating the signal associated with the pilot sequence used by the first transmitter; subtracting the estimated signal from an input signal received by that receiver; estimating the pilot signal associated with a pilot sequence used by other transmitters; and modifying the estimation of the pilot signal used by the first transmitter.

    Abstract: A method for carrying out a handover of servicing a mobile terminal from a currently serving base station to another base station in a cellular network, comprising the following steps. The currently serving base transmits information associated with the mobile terminal to one or more of its neighboring base stations. The neighboring station(s) respond by providing the serving base station with information related to the quality at which they are able to receive communications from the mobile terminal. Based on the responses received from the neighboring base stations, the serving base station selects which of its neighboring base stations will be the target base station for the mobile terminal. Upon selecting the target base station, a handover procedure is carried out, following which, the mobile terminal will receive and transmit communications via that target base station.
