Patent number: 10527142Abstract: A rotary hydraulic actuator may be configured to output rotary motion to control a hinged surface of an aircraft. The actuator includes a nested ballscrew, ballnut, and output assembly that form concentric ball races for converting the linear motion and force of the linear actuator to rotary motion and torque of the output assembly that is connected to the hinged surface. One of the ball races is helically inclined and the other of the ball races is linear. The rotary hydraulic actuator may include a ball return structure that returns the balls from a loaded path of a ball race to an unloaded path of the ball race. The ball return structure may define a ball return path that is located at the same radial distance from the actuator centerline as the loaded path for minimizing the overall diameter of the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2017Date of Patent: January 7, 2020Assignee: Parker-Hannifin CorporationInventors: Dan T. Nguyen, Ted A. McKay

Patent number: 8995802Abstract: An IR supercontinuum source for generating supercontinuum in the MIR or possibly LWIR spectral bands comprises a supercontinuum fiber formed from a heavy metal oxide host glass having low optical loss and high non-linearity over the spectral band that is stable, strong and chemically durable. The supercontinuum fiber is suitably a depressed inner clad fiber configured to support only single transverse spatial mode propagation of the pump signal and supercontinuum. The source suitably includes a tapered depressed inner clad fiber to couple the pump signal into the supercontinuum fiber. The source may be configured as an “all-fiber” source.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2014Date of Patent: March 31, 2015Assignee: NP Photonics, Inc.Inventors: Arturo Chavez-Pirson, Daniel Larry Rhonehouse, Dan T. Patent number: 8794084Abstract: Vehicles commonly include control-surfaces and other components that are selectively moved during operation among a plurality of positions. Movement of aircraft control-surface components is crucial in flight, and an actuating assembly must consistently and dependably perform during normal operation and be prepared to survive situations outside normal operation and/or to compensate for circumstances causing loss of actuator control. Jam tolerant electromechanically operated actuation systems, of both the rotary and linear types, together with their methods of operation are described herein. Specifically, electrical jam-detection and control systems and associated locking and damping devices can be electrically and mechanically engaged and disengaged, are automatically reversible, and are testable.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 2011Date of Patent: August 5, 2014Assignee: Parker-Hannifin CorporationInventors: Dan T. Nguyen, Bruce W. Behar, Ted A. McKay

Patent number: 8230750Abstract: An electromechanical actuating assembly can have a redundant design with a first electric motor providing actuator-moving power via a first drive train and a second electric motor providing actuator-moving power via a second drive train. A first decoupling train can transmit decoupling power to decouple the first drive train from the actuator and a second decoupling train for transmit decoupling power to decouple the second drive train from the actuator. The assembly is operable in a fault-tolerant mode wherein actuator-moving power is transferred only through one drive train and the other drive train is decoupled from the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2009Date of Patent: July 31, 2012Assignee: Parker-Hannifin CorporationInventors: James E. Flatt, David J. Gurrola, Bruce W. Behar, Dan T. Nguyen

Patent number: 8136418Abstract: An electromechanical actuating assembly (100), operable in a plurality of fault-tolerant modes to accommodate at least the most probable fault situations. In the M1D1-only mode, actuator-moving power is transferred only through the first drivetrain (400A) and decoupling power transmitted through the second decoupling train (600B) decouples the second drivetrain (400B) from the actuator (200). In the M2D2-only mode, actuator-moving power is transferred only through the second drivetrain (400B) and decoupling power transmitted through the first decoupling train (600A) decouples the first drivetrain (400A) from the actuator (200).Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2009Date of Patent: March 20, 2012Assignee: Parker-Hannifin CorporationInventors: Bruce W. Patent number: 7275474Abstract: In a variable displacement type hydraulic pump/motor assembly including at least one internally movable component, such as a yoke, a swashplate, and the means for moving the swashplate, the improvement includes imparting on this component absolute location indicia markings and the addition of an optical/electronic sensor unit capable of reading such indicia markings fixedly located on a housing of the pump/motor assembly and including an optical read head extending into the housing interior and located at a spaced distance from the indicia markings for reading same, relative to a reference location, and producing a signal indicative of the absolute position of the movable component. The signal can then, in turn, be used for controlling the displacement of the pump/motor assembly. A method for determining the absolute component position is also set forth.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2006Date of Patent: October 2, 2007Assignee: Parker-HannifinCorporationInventors: Bruce D. Patent number: 6738186Abstract: A compact, low-cost mid-gain Erbium Micro-Fiber Amplifier (EMFA) is provided by multi-mode pumping a micro fiber formed from a specialty multi-component glass and highly co-doped with Er:Yb. The specialty glass exhibits a much higher core absorption coefficient than standard glasses. As a result, the lower order modes are rapidly absorbed in the fiber core. The abrupt change in the mode profile perturbs the higher order modes and mode couples them into the lower order modes within a very short length of fiber, less than 20 cm. This “absorptive mode coupling” effect can double the absorption efficiency of a circular symmetric micro fiber and extend the length over which such a highly doped fiber can be efficiently inverted. The combination of multi-mode pumping with short fiber lengths reduces the form factor and cost of EMFAs.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2002Date of Patent: May 18, 2004Assignee: NP Photonics, Inc.Inventors: Shibin Jiang, Sergio Brito Mendes, Gualtiero Nunzi Conti, Dan T. Nguyen, Ewan Malcolm Wright, Arturo Chavez-Pirson, Yushi Kaneda
