Publication number: 20250003036Abstract: Ternary chromium-molybdenum-aluminum (CrMoAl) alloys that form oxidation-resistant surface films for high-temperature applications are provided. Also provided are methods for thermally pre-treating the alloys to form the oxidation resistant surface films. The surface films have a stratified structure that includes an exterior surface oxide layer comprising chromium oxides and aluminum oxides and an interior aluminum nitride-rich region comprising aluminum nitride precipitates dispersed in a CrMoAl alloy matrix. The interior aluminum nitride precipitates act as oxygen sinks to sequester oxygen diffusing inward into the CrMoAl to prevent further oxidation of the underlying bulk alloy.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2023Publication date: January 2, 2025Inventors: Dan THOMA, Michael NIEZGODA

Publication number: 20230295772Abstract: Methods for forming metal alloys, including refractory intermetallic alloys, and ceramic composites using reactive synthesis during additive manufacturing (AM) are provided. In the AM processes, an exothermic reaction path is used, such that the heat from the reaction drives the synthesis reaction. Using this approach, component powders that are readily available from commercial vendors or easily synthesized using conventional methods are mixed in selected amounts and subsequently reacted via AM to produce metal alloys or ceramic composites.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 14, 2023Publication date: September 21, 2023Inventors: John Harry Perepezko, Dan Thoma, MD Zahabul Islam, Longfei Liu

Patent number: 11701832Abstract: A system and method for controlling an additive manufacturing system to form a multi-material component. Operating parameter values may be determined for the additive manufacturing system based on a first material and a second material used to form the multi-material component to ensure a requisite level of bonding between particles of a gradient between the first and second materials. Data or models for the first and second materials, along with observed data from a plurality of sample multi-material components formed from the first and second materials may be utilized to determine the operating parameter values. In some cases, the operating parameter values may be tuned to form a multi-material component having predetermined values for parameter objectives along the gradient of the multi-material component. The additive manufacturing system may be a selective laser melting system.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 2020Date of Patent: July 18, 2023Assignee: WISCONSIN ALUMNI RESEARCH FOUNDATIONInventors: Seyyed Behzad Hosseini Rankouhi, Salman Jahani, Dan Thoma, Frank Pfefferkorn

Patent number: 8860686Abstract: The exemplary devices and processing techniques allow multiple measurement devices or chips to work together to sample a screen that is larger than one measurement device might sample, by allowing sharing X or drive lines amongst the measurements devices. Particular implementations of the subject matter described in this specification can be implemented so as to realize one or more of the following optional advantages. The sharing of the drive lines may allow for a screen sized or otherwise configured to have more measurement nodes than would be produced by the sum of the nodes that could be measured by the individual devices. For a screen that requires multiple measurement devices, the drive line sharing thus may allow use of a smaller number of measuring devices.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2010Date of Patent: October 14, 2014Assignee: Atmel CorporationInventors: Martin John Simmons, Dan Thomas Edward Pickett, Richard Paul Collins

Patent number: 8220371Abstract: A pipe tool, useful for cutting, removing a weld, and/or truing a pipe, comprises a housing; a drive interface; a gripper selectively insertable into an inner annulus of a pipe and movable independently of the housing, the gripper comprising a selectively expandable grip; a radially disposed cutter adapted to selectively engage a predetermined portion of an outer surface of the pipe, the cutter movable independently of the housing and the gripper; and a motor operatively in communication with the drive interface. In embodiments, a pipe is cut by maneuvering the pipe tool proximate an open end of a pipe, moving the gripper into the pipe; extending the grip to engage an interior wall of the pipe and secure the pipe tool from movement relative to the pipe; advancing the exposed face to a predetermined position relative to the pipe; axially advancing the cutter to engage an outer wall of the pipe; and rotating the housing until the cutters perform the desired cutting operation on the pipe.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2009Date of Patent: July 17, 2012Assignee: Oceaneering International, Inc.Inventor: Dan Thomas Benson
