    Abstract: The invention relates to nanocomposites and processes for making nanocomposites comprising butyl rubber ionomers having at least 3.5 mol % of repeating units derived from a multiolefin monomer, such as isoprene. More particularly, the invention relates to butyl rubber ionomer nanocomposites comprising high aspect ratio fillers. In one preferred aspect of the invention, the nanocomposites comprise ionomers that are generated in situ during formation of the nanocomposite, leading to intercalation of the ionomer with the nanocomposite. Nanocomposites according to the present invention exhibit improved impermeability and tensile properties as compared with prior art nanocomposites made using conventional brominated butyl rubber.
