Patent number: 7982089Abstract: There is provided a tampon pledget or tampon applicator that is covered by a wrapper having microcapsules thereon. Alternatively, the microcapsules may simply be disposed on the tampon pledget or tampon applicator. The microcapsules may contain a lubricant or a fragrance or a combination of both. The microcapsules may be ruptured prior to inserting the tampon pledget or tampon applicator and the resultant free-flowing lubricant and/or fragrance is spread on the tampon pledget, tampon applicator, or a combination thereof. The lubricant increases the ease and comfort of inserting and positioning the tampon pledget or tampon applicator. The amount of lubricant desired may be controlled by varying the pressure applied to the microcapsules. Thus, the number of microcapsules ruptured can be controlled by varying the pressure applied.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 2004Date of Patent: July 19, 2011Assignee: Playtex Products, Inc.Inventors: Suzanne Pauley, Jacqueline Davis, Dane R. Patent number: 7862533Abstract: There is provided a multiple-component tampon applicator formed from at least three separate components. A fingergrip having a reduced cross-section as compared to that of the barrel may be formed such that it is a separate component or is integrally formed with a barrel component. The reduced cross-section fingergrip provides exceptional grippability to the user. The multiple components may be formed from materials including, for example, biopolymer including starches and proteins, cardboard, heat shrink plastic, paper slurry, plastic, plastic tubing, pulp slurry, pulp-molded paper, or any combinations thereof. Prior to assembly of the applicator and prior to loading the barrel component with an absorbent pledget, petals may be formed on the insertion end of the barrel using existing processes and equipment. Alternatively, a separate insertion tip component having petals may be formed.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2005Date of Patent: January 4, 2011Assignee: Playtex Products, Inc.Inventors: Jessica E. LeMay, Dane R. Jackson, Michael L. Miller, Wayne D. Melvin

Publication number: 20100204636Abstract: A tampon applicator barrel includes a wall forming a tube with a center axis therethrough and with a hollow interior volume. The tube has a first barrel end and a second barrel end opposite the first barrel end to form a length therebetween that corresponds to the length of the center axis. The tube increases in diameter along the length of the tube from a first diameter to a second diameter that forms a main body section, and decreases in diameter along the length of the tube from the second diameter to a third diameter that forms a reverse taper section. The center axis is substantially straight throughout the extant of the tube.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 15, 2010Publication date: August 12, 2010Inventors: Jessica A. Lemay, Kathryn G. Bennett, Keith J. Edgett, Dane R. Jackson, Mario A. Turchi, Susanne Weber

Publication number: 20100160886Abstract: A pre-expanded tampon pledget is formed from cellulosic absorbent fibers. The fibers are not tightly compressed, thus, the pledget has a reduced fiber density. As a result, a softer, more pliable pledget is formed that not only increases user comfort during use, but also affords a user with comparable and/or increased leakage protection over conventional tampons or tampon pledgets.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 19, 2010Publication date: June 24, 2010Inventors: Dane R. Jackson, Karla E. Williams, Suzanne Pauley, Jefffrey Brown

Patent number: 7727208Abstract: The present invention is directed to an ergonomically improved tampon applicator having a plunger and a barrel. The barrel has four distinct sections, namely a finger grip section, a reverse taper section, a main body section, and an insertion tip section. The reverse taper section is tapered towards the fingergrip section and the main body section is tapered in an opposite direction towards the insertion tip section. A maximum diameter is formed where the reverse taper section and main body section meet on the barrel. The maximum diameter provides a sensory means to the user to alert the user when the applicator has been inserted at the proper depth in the vagina.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2002Date of Patent: June 1, 2010Assignee: Playtex Products, Inc.Inventors: Jessica E. Lemay, Kathryn G. Bennett, Keith J. Edgett, Dane R. Jackson, Mario A. Turchi, Susanne Weber

Patent number: 7160279Abstract: A tampon pledget that expands without the aid of moisture or menses. The tampon pledget has a plurality of high resiliency, non-absorbent materials and a plurality of absorbent materials. The tampon pledget has improved comfort as compared to conventional fully compressed tampon pledgets. The tampon pledget preferably has all of its non-absorbent and absorbent materials enclosed in a coverstock. The coverstock may be inverted or turned inside out, prior to filling the coverstock with the plurality of non-absorbent and absorbent materials. The coverstock insertion end, removal end, or both are pleated to further enhance comfort during use. A removal string may be secured to the inverted and pleated coverstock, above the removal end seal, by a top loop slipknot.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2003Date of Patent: January 9, 2007Assignee: Playtex Products, Inc.Inventors: Suzanne M. Patent number: 6890324Abstract: A tampon is provided having an applicator barrel adapted to house a pledget, and especially a radially expanding pledget, and receive a telescoping plunger that is adapted to expel the pledget from the barrel. The applicator barrel has a fingergrip area with at least one set of diametrically opposed, substantially flattened surfaces, convex surfaces, concave surfaces, or any combination thereof. These surfaces have at least one gripping structure to enhance the gripping characteristics of the applicator, allowing the user to securely hold the applicator during insertion and removal and during expulsion of the pledget from the barrel.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 2001Date of Patent: May 10, 2005Assignee: Playtex Products, Inc.Inventors: Dane R. Jackson, Paul A. Siracusa, Keith Edgett
