Patent number: 9954993Abstract: An apparatus for communicating with a handheld device (e.g., a cellular telephone) is provided herein. A protective shroud is configured to enclose the handheld device and protect it against incidents that commonly cause damage to handheld devices. Integral to the protective shroud is at least one of an input component configured to receive user input and a wireless transceiver configured to transmit signals to and/or receive signals from the handheld device. In one example, where both the input component and the wireless transceiver are integral to the protective shroud, signals related to received user input (e.g., where the shroud serves as a keypad) may be transmitted to the handheld device even if the protective shroud is removed from the handheld device.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2015Date of Patent: April 24, 2018Assignee: Microsoft Technology Licensing, LLCInventors: Timothy S. Paek, Eric Norman Badger, Daniel Allen Rosenfeld

Patent number: 9377950Abstract: One embodiment provides a system for processing gesture inputs on a touch screen display. The system receives a gesture input on the touch screen display. When the gesture is recognized as invoking an annotation canvas, the system determines the height, width and location of an annotation canvas, and displays the annotation canvas on the touch screen display. Then, in response to an input gesture within the annotation canvas, the system recognizes the gesture as an annotation gesture, and executes the annotation gesture. In response to receiving an input gesture outside of the annotation canvas, the gesture is interpreted by the system as a navigation input.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2011Date of Patent: June 28, 2016Assignee: PERCEPTIVE PIXEL, INC.Inventors: Daniel Allen Rosenfeld, Walter Hsiao

Patent number: 8797579Abstract: A printer, scanner device and methods for using same are described herein. A printer device may include a dedicated input that, when actuated, generates and sends a request to a computer for known data or a predetermined print job, e.g., schedule information from a personal information management (PIM) application. A scanner device may include another dedicated input that, when actuated, automatically scans a document fed to the device by the user and sends the scanned image to IM (or other) software on a computer, bypassing the need to manipulate the scanned image using scanner software. The device may be used with printed metapaper, which includes a barcode or other indicia identifying the metapaper and corresponds to a stored template image of the metapaper. When the metapaper is rescanned, the scan can be compared to the stored template information to identify changes and synchronize the changes with the IM software.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2012Date of Patent: August 5, 2014Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Daniel Allen Rosenfeld, Kumar H. Patent number: 8446367Abstract: Technologies for a camera-based multi-touch input device operable to provide conventional mouse movement data as well as three-dimensional multi-touch data. Such a device is based on an internal camera focused on a mirror or set of mirrors enabling the camera to image the inside of a working surface of the device. The working surface allows light to pass through. An internal light source illuminates the inside of the working surface and reflects off of any objects proximate to the outside of the device. This reflected light is received by the mirror and then directed to the camera. Imaging from the camera can be processed to extract touch points corresponding to the position of one or more objects outside the working surface as well as to detect gestures performed by the objects. Thus the device can provide conventional mouse functionality as well as three-dimensional multi-touch functionality.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2009Date of Patent: May 21, 2013Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Hrvoje Benko, Daniel Allen Rosenfeld, Eyal Ofek, Billy Chen, Shahram Izadi, Nicolas Villar, John Helmes

Patent number: 8340267Abstract: The claimed subject matter relates to an architecture that can preprocess audio portions of communications in order to enrich multiparty communication sessions or environments. In particular, the architecture can provide both a public channel for public communications that are received by substantially all connected parties and can further provide a private channel for private communications that are received by a selected subset of all connected parties. Most particularly, the architecture can apply an audio transform to communications that occur during the multiparty communication session based upon a target audience of the communication. By way of illustration, the architecture can apply a whisper transform to private communications, an emotion transform based upon relationships, an ambience or spatial transform based upon physical locations, or a pace transform based upon lack of presence.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2009Date of Patent: December 25, 2012Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Dinei A. Florencio, Alejandro Acero, William Buxton, Phillip A. Chou, Ross G. Cutler, Jason Garms, Christian Huitema, Kori M. Quinn, Daniel Allen Rosenfeld, Zhengyou Zhang
