  • Patent number: 4754536
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method through which a machine is enabled to feed a preloaded electrical connector (10) on appropriate spacings to allow the termination of individual wires (W) in terminals (13) in the connector through a novel indexing feed finger (120) which is capable of engaging surfaces (A-E) on the connector which are different relative to a constant indexing stroke. The indexing finger includes surfaces (126-132) capable of handling more than one set of dimensions of more than one style of connector without adjustment. The invention further includes a mechanism (180) for bending a scored portion of terminals to effect a later removal of the terminal carrier strips.

  • Patent number: 4549343
Abstract: Apparatus for installing connectors on cables is disclosed. Each connector comprises a connector housing having a conductor receiving end and terminals therein which receive wires and establish contact therewith. A cover or closure is provided which is assembled to the connector housing at the conductor receiving end. The apparatus comprises a housing jig, a cover jig which is opposed to the housing jig, and a cable locator which locates the cable between the two jigs. Cooperating cutter blades may be provided on the jigs so that when they are moved towards each other, the cable will be cut and the conductors moved into the terminals in the connector housing. In accordance with a further embodiment, the housings and covers are produced as continuous strip material which is fed to the two jigs. Strip material cutters are provided for cutting a connector housing and a section of cover members from the strip at the time of installation of the connector on the cable.

  • Patent number: 4441251
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for manufacturing harness assemblies comprising two connectors having wires extending between the connectors. The two connectors are positioned adjacent to each other in an insertion zone with the wire receiving portions of terminals in the connectors in alignment. The wires are located in two spaced-apart planes in alignment with the terminals and the wires are moved towards the connectors and into the wire receiving portions of the terminals. Thereafter, the one connector with the wires attached is removed and the other connector is moved through and beyond the insertion zone and wires are pulled from reels and located in the insertion zone in the spaced-apart planes. The cycle is then repeated in placing two additional connectors in the insertion zone between the two planes of wires. A specific apparatus for carrying out the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4194276
Abstract: Fixture for supporting an electrical connector and positioning wires in spaced relationship to the connector in preparation for insertion of the wires into the connector comprises a channel-shaped frame member having a web and sidewalls. The external surface of the web serves as a supporting surface for the mating end of the connector. First and second connector clamping means are mounted against the external surfaces of the sidewalls of the frame and clamp the connector in a predetermined position. The clamping means extend above the external surface of the web and have aligned wire positioning slots in their free ends which position the wires in alignment with the connector. The fixture is intended for use with a tool which can be latched to the fixture and which, upon actuation, trims the wires and inserts them into the connector.

  • Patent number: 4136445
Abstract: A three-position pneumatic tool having a toggle trigger for actuating a control rod which in turn controls a pair of pneumatic check-valves. Three interconnected, tandemly arranged piston assemblies are operatively associated with an air pressure source at one end while also being operatively associated with a work assembly at the other end. The trigger is spring-biased to a location wherein the tool is in a neutral workpiece engaging position. Actuation of the trigger in one direction will open one of the pneumatic valves whereupon air pressure acts upon the upper surface of one of the pistons so as to lower or retract the tool to a workpiece insertion position. Release of the trigger permits the tool to attain the workpiece engaged or neutral position. Rotation of the trigger in the opposite direction permits the other pneumatic valve to open whereupon air pressure acts upon the lower surfaces of all the pistons so as to raise and actuate the tool to the operating position.
