Patent number: 11496576Abstract: A quick relay communication protocol is used by an initiating communication device (such as a wearable electronic device, e.g., a smart watch) and/or a recipient communication device (such as a companion electronic device to the wearable electronic device, e.g., a smart phone, a tablet computer or a laptop computer) to selectively communicate messages via different communication channels. Based on available connections and a communication constraint associated with a message, a processor executing a program module in an application layer in the initiating communication device provides transmission instructions to an interface circuit in the initiating communication device, which transmits a message to the recipient communication device based on the transmission instructions.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2020Date of Patent: November 8, 2022Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Yan Yang, Joe S. Abuan, Thuy Park, Jin Hyung Park, Berkat S. Tung, Pierre J. De Filippis, Nicholas J. Circosta, Daniel B. Pollack

Publication number: 20220329682Abstract: Systems, methods and non-transitory computer readable media for allowing a user to switch between wearable items that have been paired or associated with an electronic device, such as a smartphone, are described. In one embodiment, the wearable items automatically detect a removal of a first wearable item from a user's body and an attachment of a second wearable item to the user's body. Messages from the wearable items are transmitted to the electronic device to allow the electronic device to switch the active wearable item from the first wearable item to the second wearable item. The switch can occur while the electronic device is in a locked state, and the electronic device can synchronize the second wearable item with data received from the first wearable item. Other embodiments are also described.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 26, 2022Publication date: October 13, 2022Inventors: David C. DONLEY, Julien A. POUMAILLOUX, Pierre J. DE FILIPPIS, Tyler D. Patent number: 11451508Abstract: Messaging between a companion device and an accessory device is controlled such that different modes of communication may be utilized. The different modes can implement different messaging strategies, each of which is intended for efficient power management, in view of the limited electrical power that is typically available at the accessory device. A received request message for sending from the companion device to the accessory device is sent if predetermined conditions apply, and similarly for messages from the accessory device to the companion device.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 2020Date of Patent: September 20, 2022Assignee: APPLE INC.Inventors: Alexander Ledwith, Christopher C. Jensen, John J. Iarocci, Marc J. Krochmal, Ziv Wolkowicki, Daniel B. Pollack, Darin B. Adler

Publication number: 20220247705Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology provide for secure, privacy-preserving access to electronic conferencing. In one or more implementations, an electronic device may obtain a service-specific alias that is specific to a device-identified set of services. The service-specific alias may be separate from an account alias for an account and configured to allow or deny communications to one or more devices associated with the account via the set of services. In one or more implementations, the service-specific alias is associated with a conferencing service and a conferencing session. An initiating user can provide an invitation to the conferencing session with the service-specific alias, so that participants can contact the initiating user via the service-specific alias for permission to join the conferencing session (e.g., without revealing the permanent contact information of the initiating user). In this way, the privacy of the initiating user can be preserved.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2021Publication date: August 4, 2022Inventors: Xudong LIU, Huan HE, Nelson M. LEDUC, Nicholas J. CIRCOSTA, Daniel B. POLLACK

Publication number: 20220247752Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology provide for secure, privacy-preserving access to electronic conferencing. In one or more implementations, a server may receive a request to contact an account via a service, the request including a service-specific alias for the account. The service-specific alias may be configured for contact with one or more devices associated with the account via a set of services. The server may allow or deny contact with the one or more devices associated with the account via the service, based on whether the service is included in the set of services for the service-specific alias. In one or more implementations, the service is an electronic conferencing service.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2021Publication date: August 4, 2022Inventors: Xudong LIU, Huan HE, Nelson M. LEDUC, Nicholas J. CIRCOSTA, Daniel B. POLLACK

Publication number: 20220247730Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology provide for secure, privacy-preserving access to electronic conferencing. In one or more implementations, a device may obtain a link that corresponds to a call with a second device, encrypt a request to join the call using a key obtained using the link, and send the encrypted request to a server for delivery to the second device. The link may also include information used to identify an alias for an account associated with the second device. The device may send the encrypted request to the server with the alias. The device may receive an encrypted response to the request from the server, obtain an identifier of the call from the encrypted response, and then receive an invitation to join the call associated with the identifier.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 24, 2021Publication date: August 4, 2022Inventors: Nicholas J. CIRCOSTA, Daniel B. POLLACK, Justin R. ETZINE, Nelson M. LEDUC, Frederic JACOBS

Publication number: 20220006798Abstract: Techniques are disclosed relating to multiway communications. In some embodiments, a first electronic device initiates a multiway call between a plurality of electronic devices and exchanges a first secret with a first set of electronic devices participating during a first portion of the multiway call, the first secret being used to encrypt traffic between the first set of electronic devices. The first electronic device receives an indication that first set of participating electronic devices has changed and, in response to the indication, exchanges a second secret with a second set of electronic devices participating during a second portion of the multiway call, the second secret being used to encrypt traffic between the second set of participating electronic devices. Publication number: 20210392570Abstract: Implementations of the subject technology provide for storing a temporary certificate on a mobile device for accessing services in association with a primary number. A device determines that a first subscriber identity module (SIM) card, previously used by the device, is not available for use by the device. The device determines that a second SIM card is available for use by the first device within a predetermined time period after the first SIM card is determined to be not available for use by the device. The device confirms that a communication identifier of the first SIM card is strongly tied to a user account associated with the device. The device stores a temporary certificate that attests to continued ownership of the communication identifier by the device and allows the device to access at least one service in association with the communication identifier.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2021Publication date: December 16, 2021Inventors: Nelson M. Publication number: 20210297407Abstract: Aspects of subject technology provide systems and methods for generation and distribution of a stable identifier associated with multiple aliases of a user account. The stable identifier may be provided to various electronic devices by a server, responsive to requests associated with communications to those devices from one of the associated aliases. In this way, messaging applications can utilize the stable identifier to merge conversations from a single user having multiple aliases, and secure access to a secure device can be provided to an authorized user, even if the authorized user attempts access from an unauthorized account alias.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 5, 2021Publication date: September 23, 2021Inventors: Nicholas Joseph CIRCOSTA, Patrick BURNS, Bhaskar SARMA, Daniel B. Patent number: 11088807Abstract: Application-level acknowledgements may be used to verify that a data packet has not only been received, but has been successfully processed by the appropriate application operating on a device that received the data packet. For example, in one embodiment, two devices may be registered with an identity service that enables security and push messaging. A first device may communicate a data packet to another device that is associated with the same identity account through the identity service. The device receiving the data packet may send an acknowledgement verifying receipt of the data packet. After an application has processed the data packet, an acknowledgement that the data packet was processed may also be send from the second device to the first device.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2014Date of Patent: August 10, 2021Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Daniel B.
