  • Patent number: 5522904
Abstract: A femoral implant for a hip prosthesis includes a shaft oriented in a longitudinal direction and a neck extending from said shaft at an acute angle .theta. to the longitudinal direction. The implant includes a plurality of layers of fibers in a matrix, wherein the fibers are substantially unidirectional in each respective layer. The implant is made from a stack of layers of the matrix so that the direction of fibers is unbalanced. At least 50% of the fibers are oriented in the .theta. direction and the remainder of said fibers are oriented in directions other than the .theta. angle.

  • Patent number: 5398483
Abstract: A method and apparatus for packaging, mixing and delivering bone cement. The apparatus may include a bone cement gun having a flexible container which is able to store at least two components of the bone cement. In this regard, the flexible container includes a first compartment that is able to store one component of the bone cement as well as a second compartment that is able to store the second component of the bone cement. A sealing member temporarily seals the first compartment with the second compartment, the removal of which permits the first and second components to be mixed so as to form the bone cement.

  • Patent number: 5370221
Abstract: A flexible container for packaging liquid and powder components that are to be mixed within the container to form a bone cement comprises a divider for dividing the container into first and second compartments and for isolating the components from one another, the first compartment containing the liquid component and the second compartment containing the powder component under vacuum, and a vacuum reservoir in communication with the second compartment, the vacuum reservoir being of sufficient size to receive substantially all residual interstitial gases from the powder component and thereby ensure thorough admixing of the liquid and powder components upon release of the divider.

  • Patent number: 4386907
Abstract: The lid of a ladle heater includes a valve gate rod opening so that the ladle can move toward and away from engagement with the rim of the ladle about a valve gate rod. Cylindrical plug elements are supported between the lid of the ladle heater and the ladle and move apart to straddle the stopper rod, and as the lid moves toward engagement with the rim of the ladle the cylindrical plugs engage the ladle rim as the lid continues its movement, thus resulting in the cylindrical plugs moving into and closing the stopper rod opening.
