Abstract: Methods are provided for promoting oral epithelial tissue regeneration in a subject to prevent or treat chemotherapy- or radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis with the use of compositions that comprise heparin binding epidermal growth factor (HB-EGF) and that are administered to the subject locally prior to, during, and/or after chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for promoting epithelial tissue regeneration to treat an oral or oropharyygeal wound, e.g., after tonsillectomy are disclosed. In particular, the invention relates to compositions comprising heparin binding epidermal growth factor like growth factor and their use in the treatment of an oral or oropharyngeal wound, e.g., post-therapy treatment to promote epithelial tissue regeneration in wounds, e.g., wounds resulting from surgical removal of tonsil tissue during tonsillectomy procedures, such as palatal, pharyngeal or lingual tonsillectomy. Additionally, HB-EGF can also be used after an adenoidectomy, a procedure sometimes combined with a tonsillectomy, to promote healing of wounds caused by surgical removal of adenoid tissue.
