    Abstract: A fabric-covered shoe welt, and methods of making such a welt and using it to make shoes. The welt is an extruded polymer, and has fabric attached to at least one surface. The fabric is then bonded to the sole of the shoe. The fabric is selected to adhere well to both welt and sole, usually by allowing liquid to wick into the fabric before solidification.

    Abstract: An artificial leather strip, and methods of making such a strip. The synthetic leather strip is suitable for sporting applications such as lacing baseball gloves and shoes. The strip comprises at least one reinforcing cord embedded in a matrix. The matrix comprises PVC and additives such as nitrile rubber and/or urethane, and is sufficiently tough to resist the “cheesecutter” effect when the strip is flexed, for example by being tied in a knot.

  • Precemented welt

    Abstract: A precemented welt for shoe construction, and methods of making such a welt. The welt comprises a body section, and a solid adhesive surface layer which can be activated to form a bond. The adhesive does not activate at typical truck trailer temperatures, so the welt material can be easily shipped. In one embodiment, the adhesive comprises an aromatic polyurethane elastomer, which can be activated by heating the welt to a temperature of at least 225° F. for at least 30 seconds.
