Patent number: 8733218Abstract: Apparatus for dispensing sheet material from a sheet material dispenser are described. Dispenser embodiments include drive and tension rollers supported within a housing forming a nip therebetween. Pulling of sheet material through the nip and against the drive roller rotates the drive roller. Dispenser embodiments may include a cutting mechanism powered by drive roller rotation with an improved carrier-supported blade permitting highly-efficient dispenser operation. Dispenser embodiments may include a sheet material tail length adjuster which permits the attendant to shorten or lengthen the tail length extending away from the dispenser. Dispenser embodiments may further include a sheet material conservation feature which imposes a delay between dispense cycles encouraging use of a single sheet of material and discouraging sheet material waste.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2012Date of Patent: May 27, 2014Assignee: Alwin Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: Lawrence R. Patent number: 7357348Abstract: Apparatus and methods for dispensing sheet material from a sheet material dispenser are described. A drive mechanism powered at least in part by one or more springs discharges sheet material from the dispenser. A diverter redirects at least one of the springs enabling use of a relatively longer spring in a more compact and space-efficient dispenser housing. The dispenser may include a cutting mechanism powered at least in part by the one or more springs.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2006Date of Patent: April 15, 2008Assignee: Alwin Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventor: Daniel C. Patent number: 7275672Abstract: A dispenser for dispensing flexible web material from a center pull roll capable of accommodating different types of web material in the form of sheets separated by lines of perforation. The dispenser includes dispenser apparatus permitting the device to self-adjust to the different thicknesses, sizes and physical characteristics of different types of web material. In certain preferred embodiments, the dispenser comprises a housing, a web support within the housing and structure permitting the dispenser to self-adjust to the effective cross-sectional area of the web. The preferred dispenser structure includes elements positioned to receive the web between them. At least one of the elements is movable and is biased for displacement toward the other. Frictional force applied against the web by the elements resists pull force applied to the web by a user so that a single web sheet separates from the web along the perforation between the elements and the lead end when a user pulls on the web outside the housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2001Date of Patent: October 2, 2007Assignee: Alwin Manufacturing Company, Inc.Inventors: William G. Haen, Daniel C. Kananen, Alan P. Paal, Alan J. Pierquet

Patent number: 7040566Abstract: Dispenser apparatus for dispensing flexible sheet material including material-recognition apparatus permitting the dispenser to recognize sheet material from an authorized source and to be enabled for operation with such material. The dispenser preferably includes standard mechanical components for dispensing sheet material from the dispenser including a housing, structure for supporting a roll of sheet material, drive and tension rollers forming a nip through which the sheet material is displaced as the drive roller rotates and drive apparatus in power-transmission relationship with the drive roller. The material-recognition apparatus includes a sensor mounted in the dispenser housing and in position to scan a code, preferably located on the core on which the sheet material is wound. The sensor generates a code signal corresponding to the code.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 2003Date of Patent: May 9, 2006Assignee: Alwin Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: James A. Rodrian, Lawrence R. Hansen, Daniel C. Kananen, Alan P. Paal, Robert T. Buczkiewicz

Patent number: 6460798Abstract: The invention is directed to improved apparatus for dispensing flexible web material from plural rolls including improved transfer apparatus for reliably and simply dispensing material from a secondary roll once a primary roll has been depleted. The improved transfer apparatus comprises a one-piece transfer arm, first and second transfer rollers rotatably secured with respect to the transfer arm and a sensing member secured with respect to the transfer arm in position to contact the primary roll web surface. The sensing member permits movement of the transfer arm and transfer rollers to a transfer position once the primary roll diameter diminishes to a predetermined extent causing the secondary roll material to be dispensed.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2000Date of Patent: October 8, 2002Assignee: Alwin Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: William G. Patent number: 6446901Abstract: The invention is directed to improved apparatus for dispensing flexible web material from one or more rolls including stop apparatus for reliably and simply controlling the amount of web material dispensed. The improved dispenser stop for controlling the amount of web material dispensed includes a positive stop mechanism movable between ready and stop positions as the drive roller rotates. Dispensing is stopped when the stop moves to contact an engagement surface at the end of a dispensing cycle.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 2000Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Alwin Manufacturing Co., Inc.Inventors: William G.
