    Abstract: A communication system that is specifically designed for the needs of speech impaired individuals, particularly aphasia victims, makes use of a speech generating mobile terminal communication device (SGMTD) (12) that is designed to be hand held and operated by a speech disabled individual. The SGMTD includes a database of audio files that are accessed to generate full sentences in response to single word or short phrase entries selected from a plurality of menus by the disabled user. A second, companion mobile terminal device (COMTD) (14) enables a caregiver to communicate with the speech disabled individual's SGMTD to assist the individual in communicating with the caregiver by causing the SGMTD to switch to a particular menu or list from which the caregiver wants the disabled individual to make a selection. The SGMTD also includes software that enables the device to communicate with other SGMTDs via wireless communications and thereby simulate a verbal conversation between speech impaired individuals.

    Abstract: In a photographic process printer system that receives printable pixel data into a print engine component from a computer component over a high-speed fiber channel communication pathway. Feedback control messages from the print engine component are sent over a low-speed serial channel communication pathway to the computer component to control the transmission of printable pixel data. The computer component continues to transmit packets of printable pixel data over the high-speed fiber channel communication pathway as long as the feedback control messages indicate that the print engine component is ready to receive more packets of printable pixel data.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a photographic printer with bi-directional sweeping of a monochrome CRT to expose a photosensitive medium. Image data from a host system is received by the printer and stored in a data drive system. The data drive system converts the data into a series of rows of dot row data to produce the appropriate image desired. Linear deflection amplifiers sweep the CRT's electron beam across the face of the CRT to expose the medium utilizing the dot row data. The present invention sweeps and writes data bi-directionally, eliminating the retrace period associated with sweeping and writing in one direction, and without any hold periods once printing starts. The data in every other dot row is processed in reverse order so that the dot row data utilized in the reverse writing sweep will be exposed onto the medium in proper relationship to the rows written above and below it.

    Abstract: A media spacing system for a fiber optic CRT printer. The system has a film coating over the fiber optic portion of the CRT, outside the phosphor display area, which keeps the media a fixed distance from the display area to provide for a uniform display of data on the media. The film may be applied in multiple layers, with each successive layer having a larger size, to create a rounded edge for the coating. A pressure plate is placed on the opposite side of the media from the film coating to keep the media firmly against the film coating. A compliant element, such as foam rubber, attaches the pressure plate to a fixed bracket to allow the pressure plate to adjust for bow and twist of the CRT, while maintaining pressure against the media.
