Patent number: 9408644Abstract: A length-adjustable IM nail system includes a telescoping IM nail with proximal and distal bodies. An inner magnet within the proximal body is connected to a threaded rod which, in turn, is connected to the distal body. The threaded rod passes through a threaded block which is connected to the proximal body. The position of the distal end of the threaded rod is fixed with respect to the distal body, but may rotate freely within this fixed position. An actuator is also disclosed that includes a pair of rotating magnets disposed in an angular relationship with each other and the axis of the IM nail and the patient's limb. Rotation of these outer magnets in the same direction results in rotation of the inner magnet and threaded rod and a telescoping axial movement of the threaded block and proximal body with respect to the distal body.Type: GrantFiled: July 14, 2014Date of Patent: August 9, 2016Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventors: Daniel C. Zahrly, David L. Evans, Sied W. Janna

Patent number: 9125699Abstract: Systems for reducing a fracture in a bone, comprising a bone plate and a polyaxial fastener. In some examples the head of the polyaxial fastener has a deformable portion. As a fastener is inserted into an opening of a bone plate, threads located within the opening deform the deformable portion to secure the fastener in place at a desired angle within the opening. The head of the fastener also includes a bottom portion that bears against a portion of the opening to move the bone plate relative to the underlying tissue. A securing member or other structure may be included at the interface of the head and the deformable portion to secure the deformable portion to the head. At least one flute may be included on the deformable portion that provides a lead-in for the threads within the opening to cut into the deformable portion.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2010Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventors: Daniel C. Zahrly, David Edward Chreene, Charles R. Baker, Sied W. Janna

Publication number: 20130012945Abstract: There is provided a drill guide assembly (10) adapted for removable connection to a bone plate (200, 310, 1150, 1250) and for guiding a drill bit (300) through at least one hole (202, 312) that has a central axis. The drill guide assembly (10) includes a guide sleeve (80, 600, 910, 952, 1000, 1052, 1110, 1210) and a guide collar (30) connected to the guide sleeve. The guide collar has an outrigger (40, 500, 800), and the outrigger has at least one opening (42, 504, 804) adapted to receive the drill bit. The at least one opening allows an operator to select an angle for placement of the drill bit and limits the maximum angle selectable by the operator.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 20, 2007Publication date: January 10, 2013Applicant: SMITH & NEPHEW, INC.Inventors: David E.
