  • Patent number: 7134626
Abstract: A stand-alone lug of non-isotropic polymeric or cellulosic material for installation in a recess in a core member of paperboard material for a roll of paper or other sheet material. The lug has a width in the range of from about 0.25 to about 4 inches, a length in the range of from about 0.5 to about 4 inches, and a thickness in the range of from about 0.25 to about 1 inch. The lug also having at least one radially inner surface, the total circumferential width of the inner surface or surfaces being at least about 0.2 inches. The lug may have a recess extending from one end for receiving a key on a stub-chuck. Where the lug is to be used with splined stub-chucks, the lug may have no recess.

  • Patent number: 5829713
Abstract: An annular end member of plastic material for insertion into an end portion of a hollow cylindrical core member of a tubular core assembly for a roll of paper or other sheet material has an outer annular surface securable to an inner annular surface of the core member and an inner annular surface shaped to receive a roll supporting chuck. A radially-projecting lug adjacent an end of the end member is engageable in a lug-receiving notch in the core member, and a plurality of circumferentially-spaced axially-extending channels are provided in the inner annular surface of the end member to receive radially outwardly movable portions of a chuck. The channels have side walls engageable by the radially moveable chuck portions to enable rotational movement of the chuck to be transmitted to the end member. The end member also has a notch for receiving a projection of a roll supporting chuck, the notch extending inwardly from the end of the end member immediately radially inwardly of the lug.

  • Patent number: 5657944
Abstract: A method of mounting narrower paper rolls for unwinding on a pair of stub chucks spaced for mounting and unwinding full width paper rolls and carried by arms of a pair of multiple reel stands includes providing a narrower paper roll wound on a tubular core assembly having a hollow cylindrical core member and an annular end member of metal or plastic within each opposite end portion of the core member. The end members are removed from the core member, and the core member is mounted at a desired longitudinal location on a full length shaft having opposite ends engageable with the stub chucks. Core member engaging devices are provided to enable the core member to be secured in the desired longitudinal location and to transmit rotational torque from the shaft to the core member. The full length shaft with the narrower paper roll thereon is then mounted on the stub chucks.

  • Patent number: 4875636
Abstract: A non-returnable newsprint carrier system is provided which is adapted for winding or newsprint, shipping and storing of newsprint and mounting in reels of offset printing presses on stub shafts, and which is characterized by eliminating the need for a return to the newsprint manufacturer, increasing core crush resistance during shipping and storing, and reducing roll vibration during unwinding in the printing press. The system comprises a tubular core without metal end caps thereon and defining inside surfaces at opposite ends for receiving therewithin the reel stub shafts of the offset printing press. Core plugs are provided for being inserted into the ends of the tubular core to prevent damage to the end portions of the tubular core and to the newsprint roll. Each of the core plugs comprise a solid body without holes or grooves therein and formed of crush resistant material.
