  • Patent number: 8424629
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for improved pedestrian safety during impact by a vehicle, where the vehicle includes a bumper, a hood, and structural components located generally above the bumper and in front of the hood. The apparatus includes an energy absorber with at least one crush lobe attached to a horizontal top beam of the bulkhead in a low-visible position when the hood is closed, but with the energy absorber positioned to crush and absorb energy to reduce injury to a pedestrian's upper leg when a pedestrian is impacted by the vehicle. The energy absorber is made of polymeric material, and the crush lobe is hollow and shaped to crush upon impact for maximum energy absorption.

  • Publication number: 20120211297
Abstract: An energy absorbing system includes a hood with inner and outer panels defining a rear edge cavity, and a pair of polymeric energy absorbers in the cavity. The hood and energy absorber are tuned to minimize an HIC value when a pedestrian's head contacts the hood during an impact to absorb energy prior to the hood bottoming out on the plenum of the vehicle. The energy absorber is preferably made of a polymeric material capable of withstanding high temperatures associated with going through a paint oven or e-coat process, such as high temperature nylon. The illustrated energy absorber has a hat-shaped cross section and includes criss-crossing flanges tuned to provide an optimal force-deflection curve during impact.

  • Patent number: 8016331
Abstract: A vehicle bumper system includes an elongated reinforcement beam for mounting to a vehicle frame and an energy absorber abutting a front surface of the reinforcement beam. The energy absorber includes longitudinally-elongated hollow crush lobes configured to crush and absorb energy upon a vehicle crash, the crush lobes including interconnected top, bottom, side and front walls. At least one opposing pair of the walls, such as the top and bottom walls, are elongated parallel a length of the beam to define enlarged areas that are generally unsupported, but the one pair of walls further include a plurality of spaced external ribs extending perpendicular to the length for stabilizing the enlarged areas.

  • Publication number: 20100102580
Abstract: A vehicle includes a beam and fascia over the beam, and an energy absorber mounted between the beam and fascia. The energy absorber is thermoplastic and has energy-absorbing wall geometries that are forwardly facing and configured to absorb energy from a low speed impact against a pedestrian. The wall geometries having multiple wall sections defining multiple draft angles and lengths adapted to buckle at transitions of the multiple draft angles during the low speed impact, with the numbers and types of draft angles and transitions of these draft angles being varied to provide a selected amount of resistance force needed to absorb an optimal amount of energy over time during the impact. The energy absorber is tuned for optimal minimized injury to an impacted object.

  • Patent number: 7699367
Abstract: An energy absorber includes a base flange and elongated crush boxes that to form a substantially continuously face surface on the energy absorber. Back straps are attached across a back of the crush boxes to prevent unacceptable spreading of the side walls of the crush boxes during an impact. The back straps can be integrally formed when the energy absorber is molded, and can include a living hinge at one end and a free end that can be bent over and snap attached during post-molding assembly without additional secondary operations. Alternatively, a separate wall-stabilizing thermoformed component is sandwiched between the energy absorber and beam.

  • Patent number: 6026611
Abstract: A pull-pull power sliding window assembly is disclosed, comprising a frame, a sliding pane slidable within the frame, and a pull-pull cable assembly for moving the sliding pane between a open and a closed position. The pull-pull cable assembly comprises a drive motor, a drive drum, and drive cable comprising a cable and a semi-rigid conduit wrapped around the cable, connecting the drive drum to the sliding pane for pulling the sliding pane back and forth. A retainer is mounted on the drive motor, a plunger is slidably received into an opening of the retainer, and the drive cable is routed through the plunger and into the retainer opening. A spring is positioned between the retainer and the plunger and is movable from an expanded condition where the plunger is biased away from the retainer and the drive cable is biased away from the sliding pane, and a compressed condition where the plunger is closer to the retainer and the drive cable extends further out of the conduit.
