    Abstract: Novel storage area networks (SANs) and methods of operation thereof utilize a plurality of hosts coupled via an interconnect with one or more storage units. A manager device, process or other functionality in communication with a plurality of agent processes, devices or other functionality, each of which is associated with a host. The agents identify attributes of (i) their associated hosts, (ii) interconnect to which that host is coupled, and/or (iii) storage units to which that host is coupled via the interconnect. The manager responds to these attributes identified by the agents to manage the SAN. The manager can be implemented on a first digital data processor and the hosts on further digital data processors.     Abstract: A method for automatic discovery and registration of available agents on a distributed network using universally accepted protocols is disclosed. In particular, the present invention takes advantage of the situation that TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) and HTTP (Hypertext Transport Protocol) are open protocols that have been widely accepted for a variety of applications including the immensely popular and universal Internet as well as intranets. Many devices and/or services from various vendors now conform to TCP/IP and provide an HTTP (web) server with their devices and/or services. The present invention provides a method that generates a list of addresses from a set of given criteria identifying the possible addresses for the available agents, detects for the availability of agents at those addresses, and receives and compiles the returned information (if any) from the agents at the respective addresses.

    Abstract: A method for establishing a secured communication channel between a client and a server is disclosed where a program and a set of encryption information for establishing the secured communication channel are delivered from the server to the client. The set of encryption information is compact and can be used to quickly and efficiently encipher and decipher data. In particular, the client requests a program from the server via a first secured communication channel that can be established by a web browser under the HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol with SSL) protocol. The server in response dynamically generates a set of encryption information and a token identifying this particular set of encryption information. This information is then sent with the requested program. While the program can be written in any language, the language of choice is a platform-independent language such as Java.

    Abstract: A method for avoiding a cache-full condition in an LRU organized, data set partitioned, page oriented cache of a defined capacity intercoupling a processor to an external storage subsystem is provided. The processor is capable of storing pages of a data set into a plurality of cache partitions. The method comprises the steps of periodically determining the target size of each partition for optimal partitioning, and assigning a reclaim vector to each partition specifying the number of frames to be stolen from each of the other partitions necessary to achieve the corresponding target size. If the target size of a particular partition is less than the partition's virtual minimum size, the method adjusts that partition's reclaim vector to enable the partition to steal sufficient frames from other partitions to achieve the virtual minimum size.
