  • Patent number: 5784898
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the preparation of a cryogenic fluid in the high purity liquid state, such as liquid argon, liquid helium or liquid nitrogen of high purity, substantially free from at least one of the impurities which it contains. The cryogenic fluid in the liquid state to be purified is placed in contact with an adsorbent permitting the adsorption of at least one of the impurities, and the cryogenic fluid is recovered in the high purity liquid state, characterized in that cooling of at least a proportion of the adsorbent is maintained with purified cryogenic fluid in the liquid state during at least a part of the duration of the stoppage stage separating a purification cycle N and a purification cycle N+1, which are successive.

  • Patent number: 5693302
Abstract: A process for the substantial removal of at least one of the carbon monoxide and hydrogen impurities contained in a composite gas, according to which:(a) at least one of the carbon monoxide and hydrogen impurities contained in the composite gas are reacted with oxygen, in contact with a catalyst comprising particles of at least one metal chosen from the group consisting of gold and palladium, these particles being supported by titanium dioxide, in order respectively to form carbon dioxide and water;(b) optionally, the carbon dioxide and the water formed are removed from the composite gas;(c) the composite gas, substantially free of its carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen impurities, is recovered.

  • Patent number: 5685172
Abstract: A process and apparatus for preparing a flow which is substantially purified with respect to at least one of the impurities O.sub.2 and CO, according to which:a) a flow to be purified, comprising at least 90 mol % of a compound chosen from nitrogen, helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon or a mixture of these compounds and at least one of the impurities O.sub.2 and CO, is cooled to a temperature of less than -40.degree. C.;b) the cooled flow is passed through an adsorbent for the adsorption of at least one of the impurities O.sub.2 and CO, the adsorbent comprising at least one porous metal oxide;c) a flow which is substantially purified with respect to at least one of the impurities O.sub.2 and CO is recovered.

  • Patent number: 5662873
Abstract: A process for the substantial elimination of at least one of the impurities carbon monoxide and hydrogen contained in a gaseous compound, according to which:(a) at least one of the impurities carbon monoxide and hydrogen contained in the gaseous compound is caused to react with oxygen, in contact with a catalyst comprising particles, on the one hand, (i) of gold, silver or gold and silver, and, on the other hand, (ii) of at least one metal of the platinum family, these particles being supported by a support to form, respectively, carbon dioxide and water;(b) as needed, the carbon dioxide and water are eliminated from the gaseous compound;(c) the gaseous compound is recovered substantially free from its impurities of carbon monoxide and/or hydrogen.

  • Patent number: 5589151
Abstract: In a process for the preparation of high-purity liquid nitrogen substantially free from at least one of the impurities hydrogen, carbon monoxide and oxygen, liquid nitrogen to be purified is placed in contact with an adsorbent and high-purity liquid nitrogen is recovered. A device for making use of this process includes a source of liquid nitrogen to be purified connected by a conduit to the entry of a reactor containing an adsorbent, the reactor exit being provided with a connecting conduit.

  • Patent number: 5478534
Abstract: Process for preparing ultra-pure nitrogen containing less than 100 ppb (parts per billion) impurities, characterized in that at least the impurities consisting of carbon monoxide (CO) and/or hydrogen (H.sub.2) are removed by passing the gas from which at least one of these two components has to be removed, over a bed of particles including a metallic element namely copper (Cu) and/or ruthenium (Ru) and/or rhodium (Rh) and/or palladium (Pd) and/or osmium (Os) and/or iridium (Ir) and/or platinum (Pt) supported on a particulate support, by the technique of ion exchange and/or by the technique of impregnation. This technique enables to produce ultra-pure nitrogen by using it either with nitrogen obtained by distillation, or air to be distilled as an additional step for the removal of CO.sub.2 and H.sub.2 O. A device for carrying out the process constitutes another object of the invention.
