Abstract: A method for enhancing the functionality of series software of a control unit, in particular for a motor vehicle, having the steps of providing a control unit having an interface to which an external hardware device may be connected, having a non-volatile series software memory area in which the series software is stored, and having a volatile upload memory area, connecting an external hardware device, in which upload software is stored, to the interface loading the upload software from the external hardware device into the volatile upload memory area of the control unit, and executing the upload software in the upload memory area, the execution of the upload software enhancing the functionality of the series software by a diagnostic and/or test function.
