  • Patent number: 8660542
Abstract: A multi-carrier receiver radio monitors frequency channels associated with at least one talkgroup to which a multi-carrier receiver radio subscribes. The talkgroup is associated with a set of frequency channels that may carry group call activity. The radio monitors each frequency channel of the set of frequency channels associated with the talkgroup for group call activity. During monitoring, when a new call is detected on one frequency channel of the set of frequency channels associated with the talkgroup, the radio joins the new call. While joined to the new call, the radio continues to monitor the set of frequency channels associated with the talkgroup for additional transmissions to the talkgroup and to monitor a set of frequency channels associated with another talkgroup to which the multi-carrier receiver radio also subscribes for group call activity on the other talkgroup.

  • Publication number: 20130288662
Abstract: In a two-way radio frequency (RF) communications system having at least one fixed terminal, one or more channels, and a plurality of subscriber units, the method comprising, a device receives, from a first subscriber unit, an alert tone request identifying at least a type of alert tone and at least one destination. In response, the device causes one or more fixed terminals corresponding to one or more radio sites associated with the destination identified in the alert tone request to instruct their subscriber units to play back a locally stored or generated alert tone corresponding at each subscriber unit. Receiving subscriber units then play back the alert tone on a continuous, periodic, or semi-periodic basis, selectively mixing the alert tone with call audio if present.

  • Patent number: 8243750
Abstract: A method for Fixed Network Equipment (FNE) to control the three of four and one of four slow associated control channel (SACCH) pattern on an Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Project 25 (P25) trunked voice channel is provided. Knowledge of this pattern by both the FNE and radio allows for unique information to be signaled in each type of SACCH. According to some embodiments, an operation enables controlling the floor (inbound) while there is an independent outbound (floor) (e.g. Console takeover). The provided operation also allows each radio to differentiate inbound floor control signaling from outbound caller identification (ID). Having the infrastructure control the inbound SACCH pattern and communicate this to all radios, makes the correct detection of the transmitted pattern from the radio more reliable.

  • Publication number: 20120172083
Abstract: A method for coordinating wireless coverage between a first wireless network and a second wireless network for a communication device, wherein the communication device performs the method, which includes: detecting wireless coverage by the first wireless network; affiliating to a communication group to become a member of the communication group; receiving, from an infrastructure device coupled to the first wireless network, a set of channels on the second wireless network for the communication group, wherein the set of channels is determined based on the location of members of the communication group; detecting a loss of coverage in the first wireless network of at least one member of the communication group; and, responsive to detecting the loss of coverage, switching to a channel in the set of channels on the second wireless network for communications for the communication group.

  • Patent number: 8144846
Abstract: A system and method for interrupting a transmitting communication unit in a communication system. When a call is first initiated, the call is assigned to a communication channel and broadcast from a base site using the assigned communication channel. If it is determined that a transmitting communication unit should be interrupted, a zone controller signals a base site to generate an interrupt message. The base site generates an interrupt message containing an identification code for the transmitting communication unit and broadcasts the interrupt message on an outbound link of the communication channel. The transmitting communication unit, while transmitting on an inbound link of the communication channel, continuously monitors the outbound link. If the transmitting communication unit receives, on the outbound link, an interrupt message containing an identification code matching its own identification code, the transmitting communication unit stops transmitting.

  • Patent number: 8098639
Abstract: System and method for efficiently managing communication channel assignments within talkgroups having dual mode communication units capable of operating on a first communication channel type and on a second communication channel type, and single mode communication units capable of operating only on the second communication channel type. If, at a base site, each of the communication units associated with a talkgroup is a dual mode communication unit, a call for that talkgroup is assigned to be broadcast using a channel of the first communication channel type. If, at least one of the communication units associated with the talkgroup at the base site is a single mode communication unit, the call for that talkgroup is assigned to a channel of the second communication channel type. As communication units roam between sites, channel assignments are continuously updated based on the types of communication units at each base site at any one time.

  • Patent number: 7986692
Abstract: A system and method for transmitting call information in a communication system having sites with long link delays. Upon a call being initiated within the communication system, a zone controller determines the participating sites that are to be involved in the call and assigns an IP multicast group address for the call. The zone controller also determines whether any of the participating sites have a long link delay. If any of the participating sites do have a long link delay, the zone controller also assigns an IP unicast address for each such site. The call information is then transmitted both on the IP multicast address as well as on each assigned IP unicast address to ensure that the call is received by each participating site without the loss of call information.

  • Patent number: 7970426
Abstract: The present disclosure provides an efficient and effective method for allocating provisional PUIDs and PGIDs to subscriber units and groups during a failure, such that when the communication system recovers, there is a decrease in or elimination of the number of dropped or missed communications. The present disclosure reserves a range of provisional PUIDs and PGIDs for resource controllers operating in a region of system failure to assign when subscriber units roam into the region of failure in the communication system. The present disclosure addresses creating PUID and PGID ranges for resource controllers to assign to roaming subscriber units in order to allow for assignment of PUIDs and PGIDs during periods of subsystem isolation and site trunking, i.e., when the particular site or subsystem cannot communicate with the rest of the communication system. The present disclosure also addresses recovering from these situations, re-registration, and reallocation of PUIDs and PGIDs.

  • Patent number: 7962166
Abstract: A receiving device in the trunked radio communications system receives an outbound signaling word comprising at least an opcode field and a band plan field, wherein the opcode field indicates that the outbound signaling message is a system status message and the band plan field indicates the band plan in use on the site. In another embodiment, the receiving device receives an outbound signaling word comprising at least an opcode field, a site identification field and a four bit band plan field, wherein the opcode field indicates that the outbound signaling message is an adjacent control channel message, the site identification field identifies a second site, and the four bit band plan field indicates the band plan in use on the second site.

  • Patent number: 7917131
Abstract: A system and method for processing calls in a communication system utilizing distributed signaling. When a call signal having distributed identification data is received on a communication channel, the call information (such a voice, data, video, etc.) is initially passed through the system without verification until sufficient identification data (such as the color code) has been obtained to determine whether the source of the call is valid. Once sufficient identification data has been obtained, the source is verified. If the source is valid, the call information continues to be passed through the system. However, if source is invalid, the call information is blocked for the present call as well as for subsequent calls on the same communication channel, and passing of the call information through the system does not resume until a received call is subsequently assessed to be valid.

  • Patent number: 7848363
Abstract: A system and method for dynamically altering detection criterion value at a receiving device based on the portion of a call signal being received. A receiving device is configured to extract a first call signal portion from the call signal, and compare the first call signal portion to a plurality of call information portions, wherein each call information portion has a detection criterion value. If the first call signal portion matches one of the call information portions, the receiving device adjusts the detection criterion value for at least one of the plurality of call information portions, extracts a second call signal portion from the call signal, and compares the second call signal portion to the plurality of call information portions.

  • Patent number: 7840009
Abstract: A first infrastructure system device other than a mobile station generates key material and forwards the key material to a second infrastructure system device other than a mobile station. A determination is made as to whether a mobile station for which the key material is directed is active on the system, and if so the key material is forwarded to a base station where the mobile station is active. The base station forwards the key material to the mobile station.
