    Abstract: A superabrasive cutting insert formed from a generally flat composite wafer of predetermined shape and thickness. The wafer includes a center layer of ultra-hard material, which is integrally bonded to top and bottom support layers or in some cases a single support layer. The outer edge of the center layer forms at least one cutting edge along at least one side of the wafer. The wafer includes at least one profiled chip breaker formed inwardly of the cutting edge by selectively removing a portion of at least one of the support layers inwardly from the cutting edge.
