Patent number: 8265784Abstract: A library has a physical cartridge access port (PCAP) for receiving cartridges which are to be entered/ejected into/out of the library. The library is partitioned into partitions each having a set of the library cells such that the library appears to a host as multiple libraries with each partition appearing to the host as a respective one of the multiple libraries. Some cells are reserved for use by the partitions as virtual cartridge access ports (VCAPs) which appear to the host as being the PCAP such that cartridges, which are to be ejected out of the partitions, are exported from the cells of the partitions to the VCAPs for subsequent transfer from the VCAPs to the PCAP, and such that cartridges, which are to be entered into the partitions, are imported from the VCAPs to the cells of the partitions after having been moved from the PCAP to the VCAPs.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2005Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Oracle America, Inc.Inventors: Antonio Borrego, Donald Wait, Daniel J. Patent number: 7230791Abstract: The capacity of a rack-mounted storage library having a media element handling assembly is expanded by mounting a panel segment to a rack side such that the panel segment faces the rack interior. At least one of media element housing cells and a media player are supported on the panel segment such that the cells and the player face the rack interior. The library capacity is increased by mounting another panel segment having cells or a player to another rack side. The panel segments are mounted to the rack sides independent of one another or are connected together prior to being mounted to the rack sides. The handling assembly moves through the rack interior to load media elements held by cells into a player. The panel segments may be mounted to the rack sides at the same or different rack length positions.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2003Date of Patent: June 12, 2007Assignee: Storage Technology CorporationInventors: Timothy C. Patent number: 7184242Abstract: A storage library includes cells supported within a frame for holding media elements. A robot assembly is operable for moving toward the cells and manipulating media elements held by the cells. The robot is containable within a module which is removably mountable to the frame to provide modular replacement and removal of the robot from the frame. The robot is contained within the module as the module is mounted to the frame and moves out from the module to move toward the cells and manipulate media elements held by the cells while the module is mounted to the frame. The module is removably dismounted out of the frame while the robot is contained within the module to provide the modular removal of the robot. The module is removably mounted into the frame while a new robot is contained within the module to provide the modular replacement of the robot.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2003Date of Patent: February 27, 2007Assignee: Storage Technology CorporationInventors: Timothy C. Ostwald, Joseph Paul Manes, Daniel J. Plutt, Jon Benson

Patent number: 7146622Abstract: A storage library which enables capacity expansion without additional robotics hardware includes a frame, first and second modules having respective cells, and a robot. The frame supports the first module at a first frame length position such that the first cells are positioned at the first frame length position and along the periphery of a channel extending within the frame interior through the frame length. The frame supports the second module when the second module is mounted to the frame such that the second cells are positioned at the second frame length position and along the channel periphery. The robot has a support connected to the frame and a picker movably connected to the support. The picker moves through the channel to manipulate media elements held by the first cells, and to manipulate media elements held by the second cells when the second module is mounted to the frame.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2003Date of Patent: December 5, 2006Assignee: Storage Technology CorporationInventors: Timothy C. Patent number: 7009798Abstract: A system, method and program are disclosed for automatically exchanging tape cartridges between a plurality of automated tape libraries arranged in close proximity. The automated cartridge exchange system translates a forward and reverse stroke in a first axis directed parallel to the sidewalls of two adjacent tape libraries to a radial movement directed to a second axis perpendicular to the first axis and into and out of the tape libraries (e.g., via a pass-through port in each library). Thus, the cartridge density of the overall library system is maximized by limiting the width of the main assembly of the automated cartridge exchange system and thereby minimizing the distance between the two adjacent libraries. Also, the automated cartridge exchange system can be blind-mated to the adjacent libraries and thus provide a hot-swappable (on-line), readily serviceable component that is not available from the existing approaches.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2004Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Storage Technology CorporationInventors: Sanjiv K. Gupta, Mark W. Moyer, Daniel J. Plutt

Patent number: 6922307Abstract: A data storage library having two inward facing storage arrays and two outward (i.e., back to back) facing arrays between the two inward facing arrays, such that an access device positioned to access one of the outward facing arrays can perform a rotation to be positioned to access one of the inward facing arrays. Thus a single access device can access all four arrays only by performing translations and rotations as necessary.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2001Date of Patent: July 26, 2005Assignee: Storage Technology CorporationInventors: Timothy Craig Ostwald, Daniel J. Plutt, Bernard Alan Johnson, Donald Robert Manes, Roger Harry Grow

Patent number: 6798612Abstract: A system and method for distributing electrical power to an automated robotic device for transporting media cartridges in a data storage library. The system and method include a power distribution strip having a substantially planar insulating member with opposed first and second sides, and first and second oppositely charged electrical conductors on the opposed first and second sides for providing power to the robotic device. The system and method also include multiple contacts on the robotic device for contacting the first and second conductors. The multiple contacts include a first pair of contacts for contacting the first conductor and a second pair of contacts for contacting the second conductor. At least one of the first pair of contacts and at least one of the second pair of contacts maintain contact with the first and second conductors, respectively, as the robotic device moves in the library.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2001Date of Patent: September 28, 2004Assignee: Storage Technology CorporationInventors: Frank T. Smith, Timothy C. Ostwald, Daniel J. Plutt
