  • Patent number: 4391655
Abstract: High Temperature Oxidation (HTO) of aluminum subjected to heat treatment is controlled by exposing the aluminum surface to a metal chloride prior to heat treatment. Transition metal chlorides are preferred for such treatment.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 28, 1981
Date of Patent: July 5, 1983
    Assignee: Reynolds Metals Company
Inventors: Michael E. Thurston, William A. Cassada, III, Daniel J. Schardein
  • Patent number: 4376801
Abstract: A selective solar coating for solar collectors is disclosed. The coating is characterized by its high absorptance and low emittance. The coating comprises an organic compound or substance having a high molecular weight and a high carbon content, such as a petroleum, vegetable or animal oil, fat or wax, which is pyrolyzed to produce a carbon black pigmented varnish.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 19, 1982
Date of Patent: March 15, 1983
    Assignee: Reynolds Metals Company
    Inventor: Daniel J. Schardein
  • Patent number: 4192722
Abstract: A composition and method for deoxidation or "activation" treatment of aluminum according to the stannate process in an alkaline tin solution, for either immersion or electrolytic plating of aluminum with tin, that provides an adherent tin layer and extends the allocable elapsed transfer time, between the activation bath and bronze strike bath, from the 20 seconds of the prior art to up to 2 minutes or more, whereby the stannate method for depositing tin on heavy parts such as aluminum automobile bumpers is commercially practicable for automatic plating of certain aluminum alloys such as alloy 7029.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 25, 1978
Date of Patent: March 11, 1980
    Assignee: Reynolds Metals Company
Inventors: Daniel J. Schardein, Charles M. Rogers, Diane N. Vice
