  • Patent number: 6569198
Abstract: A prosthetic device inserted into a blood vessel decreases the severity of valve regurgitation during ventricular contraction. The prosthetic device reduces the circumference of the valve annulus, causing the valve leaflets attached to the annulus to close more completely. A first preferred embodiment is an elongated member that includes distal and proximal segments separated by an intermediate segment. The prosthetic device has at least one anchor control wire to anchor the device in the blood vessel and at least one length control wire. A second preferred embodiment is an elongated member that includes distal and proximal segments that are connected by a pivot or hinge joint. A control wire is anchored on the distal segment and pivotally moves the distal and proximal segments closer together. Rotation of the length control wire of the first embodiment or the control wire of the second embodiment reduces the circumference of the valve annulus.

  • Patent number: 5833925
Abstract: An ion selective electrode assembly is provided having a sample injection cup, a flow cell analyzer and multiple module pump for simultaneously pumping liquids between the sample injection cup and the flow cell analyzer using a single motor. One of the pump modules is capable of pumping a reference solution directly to the flow cell analyzer. Flow through each pumping module is controlled by a pair of rocker valves. The sample injection cup includes a first diaphragm valve for allowing a mixture of sample and reagent to flow to the flow cell analyzer. The sample injection cup further includes a second diaphragm valve installed immediately downstream of the first diaphragm for allowing a flushing solution to flow throughout the sample injection cup and the flow cell analyzer.

  • Patent number: 5596403
Abstract: A system for measuring relative angular position about a roll-axis, a yaw-axis, and a pitch-axis includes a source assembly and a receiver assembly. A source assembly emits a rotationally polarized carrier wave laser beam. A laser beam from a laser diode is directed through a linear polarizer and then through the center of a rotating half-wave plate. The plate is secured to a hollow shaft of an electric motor. The beam travels through the plate and through the hollow shaft. A reference signal corresponding to the rotational modulation imposed by the rotating plate is obtained using a flag which is secured to the shaft and positioned to actuate an optical encoder. After leaving the source assembly and reaching the receiver assembly, the beam travels through another linear polarizer, a neutral density filter, and an aplanatic achromatic lens to a two-dimensional position sensing detector. In response to the beam, the position sensing detector produces output signals that correspond to the position of the beam.

  • Patent number: 5103546
Abstract: A process and apparatus is described for providing a strip of flexible closure material to be affixed to a receptacle. The strip of flexible closure material comprises a combination of a plurality of interengaging strip portions in their interengaged state. The process includes the step of supplying a tape of flexible closure material having a transverse width with a plurality of interengaging elements across the transverse width that extend from the tape. Then, the tape is separated along its longitudinal length into a plurality of strip portions with at least two of the strip portions having an interengaging element extending therefrom. Lastly, the strip portions having an interengaging element are brought into contact with one another while mating the interengaging element of each of the strip portions brought together with that of the other. The process takes place continuously in line with equipment for affixing the flexible closure material to a receptacle.

  • Patent number: 4669342
Abstract: A retaining device for connecting a tool head with a tapered eye to a tapered tongue of a tool handle. The retaining device includes two threaded, J-shaped bolts, a V-shaped plate having a hole in each leg for receiving the threaded portion of a J-bolt, and two hex nuts. The V-plate is positioned on the outer surface of the tongue with the J-bolts extending through the eye and latching a lower surface of the tool head. When the nuts are threaded onto the J-bolts and tightened, the J-bolts are drawn upwardly and radially outwardly, forcing the tool head into a secure, wedged engagement with the tool handle.
