  • Patent number: 9016076
Abstract: A fluid spray device system (1) that maintains a resultant fluid discharge, or a material onto which the resultant fluid is discharged, within a predetermined range of a set-point temperature by regulating the flow rate of a throttling gas using a proportional valve (22). The resultant fluid has throttling gas and cryogenic fluid components. Both the throttling gas and cryogenic fluid are preferably supplied from a single tank (11) and the cryogenic fluid supply is pressure-regulated and includes a triaxial delivery hose (33) having a return line with a back-pressure regulator (54).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 27, 2008
Date of Patent: April 28, 2015
Assignee: Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.
Inventors: Kevin John Giardiniere, John Lewis Green, Ranajit Ghosh, Daniel James Gibson, Zbigniew Zurecki
  • Patent number: 8820199
Abstract: A method and apparatus for discharging a temperature-controlled flow of a resultant fluid (32) containing a throttling gas and cryogenic fluid onto a material (14) for the purpose of maintaining the temperature of the material within a desired temperature range and below the glass transition temperature of the material during machining. Also disclosed is an apparatus and method for deburring or deflashing a machined material by discharging a temperature-controlled flow of a resultant fluid (132) onto a machined material (114) to harden the burrs (134a), then brushing the material (114) to remove the hardened burrs (143a).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 20, 2008
Date of Patent: September 2, 2014
Assignee: Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.
Inventors: Ranajit Ghosh, Jeffrey Alan Knopf, Daniel James Gibson, Thomas Mebrahtu, Kevin John Giardiniere
  • Patent number: 8474273
Abstract: A coolant delivery system and method for maintaining a temperature within a predetermined range of a set-point temperature in a vessel into which a coolant gas is discharged or a temperature of a material onto which the coolant gas is discharged. The coolant gas results from the mixing of a supply gas with a cryogen. Temperature regulation is provided by regulating the flow rate of a cryogen using a proportional valve, while providing an essentially constant flow rate of a supply gas.

Date of Patent: July 2, 2013

  • Publication number: 20080276771
Abstract: A machining method and an article manufactured therefrom, the method improving mechanical properties in a work surface by performing a very shallow machining pass using a cutting tool, in combination with application of a cryogenic fluid to the work surface and the cutting tool, the combination compressive force and cryogenic cooling increasing hardness, increasing compressive residual stress, and reducing surface roughness in the manufactured article.
