The method comprises obtaining images of the ground in which the population was grown, showing soil, ground cover, and/or plant debris and further showing fallen seed pods and/or fallen seed pod carpels; sending the images to an image processing system; utilizing, via the image processing system, an instance segmentation model to identify and measure dropped seed pods shown in the images; and utilizing, via the image processing system, instance segmentation to identify and measure shattered seed pod carpels shown in the images. The dropped seed pods and shattered seed pods are distinguished from one another and measured separately from one another.
