  • Publication number: 20180341124
Abstract: An optical device includes a nanostructured transparent dielectric film, which is a Huygens metasurface. The Huygens metasurface imparts a phase change to light propagating through or reflecting from the surface. The phase change can be achieved by means of a resonant interaction between light and the Huygens resonators, resulting in a controllable phase change of 0 to 2? with approximately 100% light transmission characterized by a below 0.1 dielectric loss tangent of delta and with the height of the resonators less than the wavelength of light. In one embodiment, the metasurface includes titanium dioxide, but many materials or stacks of different materials may be used. The optical device is functional throughout the visible spectrum between 380 and 700 nm. The nanostructured transparent dielectric film includes a plurality of Huygens resonators.

  • Publication number: 20180304994
Abstract: A flight control computer of an aircraft is likely to operate in a so-called incidence protection mode in which it is configured to compute the deflection orders of an elevator as a function of incidence angle values supplied by a set of incidence probes, so as to keep the incidence angle of the aircraft within a range of acceptable incidence angle values. The flight control computer is configured to, when only one incidence probe is operational: compute a first estimated incidence angle value of the aircraft, by a first estimator and a second estimated incidence angle value of the aircraft, by a second estimator unlike the first estimator; and keep the incidence protection mode activated as long as the incidence angle value supplied by the single operational incidence probe is consistent with at least one out of the first estimated incidence angle value and the second estimated incidence angle value.

  • Patent number: 9680414
Abstract: This invention comprises a nonlinear micro- and nano-mechanical resonator that can maintain frequency of operation and amplitude of operation for a period of time after all external power has been removed from the device. Utilizing specific nonlinear dynamics of the micromechanical resonator, mechanical energy at low frequencies can be input and stored in higher frequencies modes, thus using the multiple degrees of freedom of the resonator to extend its energy storage capacity. Furthermore, the energy stored in multiple vibrational modes can be used to maintain the resonator oscillating for a fixed period of time, even without an external power supply. This is the first demonstration of an “autonomous” frequency source that can maintain a constant frequency and vibrating amplitude when no external power is provided, making it ideal for applications requiring an oscillator in low power, or limited and intermittent power supplies.

  • Patent number: 9548677
Abstract: A nanopositioning system for producing a coupling interaction between a first nanoparticle and a second nanoparticle. A first MEMS positioning assembly includes an electrostatic comb drive actuator configured to selectively displace a first nanoparticle in a first dimension and an electrode configured to selectively displace the first nanoparticle in a second dimensions. Accordingly, the first nanoparticle may be selectively positioned in two dimensions to modulate the distance between the first nanoparticle and a second nanoparticle that may be coupled to a second MEMS positioning assembly. Modulating the distance between the first and second nanoparticles obtains a coupling interaction between the nanoparticles that alters at least one material property of the nanoparticles applicable to a variety of sensing and control applications.

  • Publication number: 20160306824
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for obtaining and managing remote sensing data (e.g. Earth observation data). A remote sensing platform obtains imagery and other remote sensing data of the Earth and other planetary objects. The remote sensing platform includes the International Space Station, or manned and unmanned spacecraft or aircraft. A sensor captures observation data and transmits the data to ground stations on the Earth. A ground segment receives and stores the data. Users use an order management system to place orders for the observation data, which specify processing parameters for the remote sensing data. The remote sensing data is retrieved from storage is processed according to the parameters to generate a data product. This system provides tools for searching and analyzing the data, and for interacting with the system through an API. The system combines data that is produced by the remote sensing platform and by third parties.
