    Abstract: There is provided a composition of matter comprising a cellular aggregate distributed in a hardenable or hardened binder or matrix material, in which the aggregate consists of or includes (i) a fraction of cellular glass beads of mesh sizes up to 3 mm, individually containing one or more interior cells with a maximum cross-sectional dimension at least 0.3 times the mesh size of the bead and having a non-cellular or micro-cellular surface skin, and (ii) a fraction of cellular glass beads of mesh sizes above 3 mm, individually having a multicellular core with a cell population per unit volume substantially higher than the population of said interior cells in said fine fraction beads and likewise having a non-cellular or micro-cellular surface skin.
