The matte finish is produced by the combination of an etched mold in which the product is molded to physically affect the outer surface and a colorant compounded in the thermoplastic to chemically affect the outer surface. The colorant provides a diffused translucency. The etching adds tactile texture. The product is made by blow-molding techniques. Containers such as shampoo bottles can benefit from such visual and tactile sensations for the purpose of creating a trade dress for a consumer product.

Abstract: A method includes steps for forming an intermediate composition. The intermediate composition is to be added to a polymer, or to a polymer precursor, in a process of manufacturing a low permeability container formed of the polymer or polymer precursor. The method includes forming an intermediate composition which, if added to the polymer or polymer precursor, will inhibit the permeability of the low permeability container subsequently formed of the polymer or polymer precursor. The forming step includes mixing a solid dispersant with clay to form the intermediate composition as a solid.

Abstract: A coupling apparatus couples a container of colorant to a feeder structure for a polymer processing machine. The coupling apparatus includes a tubular structure with an outlet portion that engages the feeder structure, and an inlet portion that receives and supports the container above the outlet portion. The inlet portion has an upright position in which it supports the container in an overturned position from which the colorant can flow out of the container under the force of gravity. A joint, which is preferably a hinge, supports the inlet portion for movement to an overturned position. The inlet portion can then receive the container in an upright position from which the colorant will not spill from the container. Preferably, a releaseable locking device interacts with the joint to retain the inlet portion of the tubular structure releaseably in its upright position.
