Patent number: 10634218Abstract: A transmission apparatus is disclosed. The transmission apparatus includes at least a first gearset and a last gearset. Each gearset includes a sun gear, a set of planetary gears, and a ring gear. The ring gears have splined outer surfaces. Each gearset has a rotational speed and a torque. A drum encloses and mates with the gearsets. The drum has splined inner surfaces that mate with the splined outer surfaces. The last splined outer surface transfers the last torque of the last gearset directly to the drum. The drum transfers at least a portion of the last torque to the first splined outer surface of the first gearset. This reduces the first rotational speed of the first gearset and increases the first torque of the first gearset, thereby reducing the last rotational speed of the last gearset and increasing the last torque of the last gearset.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 2017Date of Patent: April 28, 2020Inventors: David R. Patent number: 10544017Abstract: A winch is described that includes a drum, a motor and transmission, and a tensioner. The motor and transmission apply torque to the drum, thereby enabling the drum to draw in and let out a line. The tensioner is positioned adjacent to the drum, such that when the line passes between the tensioner and drum, the line is in frictional contact with the tensioner and drum. The tensioner rotates with a linear speed exceeding a linear speed of the drum as the line is let out from the drum, and rotates freely as the line is drawn onto the drum. Methods for making and using the winch are also described.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2016Date of Patent: January 28, 2020Assignee: Hall Labs LLCInventors: David R. Publication number: 20200017330Abstract: A detachable line guide is disclosed. A screw with a helical groove between threads is provided. A guide is positioned a fixed distance perpendicular to the screw and can travel laterally freely. A follower mount is detachably affixed to the guide. The follower mount has a follower that is biased into the groove. Rotation of the screw causes the follower to track the groove and move the follower mount laterally. The guide is configured for a line to pass therethrough. When the line exerts a lateral force above a predetermined threshold against the guide, the guide and the follower mount detach.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2018Publication date: January 16, 2020Applicant: Hall Labs, LLCInventors: David R. Publication number: 20200017339Abstract: A detachable line guide is provided. A screw with a helical groove is provided. A guide is positioned a fixed distance perpendicular to the screw and can travel laterally freely. The guide includes a follower which is attached to the guide by a spring. The follower is biased into the groove. Rotation of the screw causes the follower to track the groove and move the guide laterally. The guide is configured for a line to pass therethrough. When the line exerts a lateral force above a predetermined threshold against the guide, the follower rides up and out of the groove as the spring is compressed.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2018Publication date: January 16, 2020Applicant: Hall Labs, LLCInventors: David R. Publication number: 20190248632Abstract: A device and method for retaining a line on a drum is disclosed. The drum has a slot which extends from a point along the periphery and into the drum in a first direction and at an acute angle relative to a tangent at the point. A clamp is provided with a slot portion and a line retaining portion. The slot portion is engaged with the slot such that relative movement between the clamp and the drum causes the slot portion to move in the first direction. As tension is applied to the line, a first force is created on the slot member in the first direction, resulting in a second force being applied by the line retaining portion in the first direction, clamping the portion of the line against the drum.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 12, 2018Publication date: August 15, 2019Inventors: David R.
