  • Publication number: 20120183034
Abstract: A channel in a multiple carrier communication system is equalized by computing a target spectral response, shortening the impulse response of the channel so that a significant part of an energy of the impulse response is confined to a region that is shorter than a target length and filtering the signal based on the target spectral response.

  • Publication number: 20070064817
Abstract: A communication system (10) receives a communication signal comprising first and second data with different compression levels, such as highly compressed and weakly compressed levels. A mode detector (15) detects the level of compression. One or more signal decoders (20, 22) decode the highly compressed data. An analyzer (30) determines the type of enhancement required. One or more processors (48, 50, 80) enhance the data as required. An encoder (60) reencodes the enhanced decoded data. Metrics (90) may aid the operation of the analyzer (30). The communication system may include telephones (120, 122, 124, 126). Processors (103, 104) enhance signals in opposite first and second directions between pairs of the telephones. A path (106) connects the processors in tandem. One or more switches (101, 102) disable signal enhancement for one of the processors depending on the compression level of the signals to avoid degrading call quality.

  • Publication number: 20060247923
Abstract: In order to enhance the quality of a communication signal derived from speech and noise, a filter divides the communication signal into a plurality of frequency band signals. A calculator generates a plurality of power band signals each having a power band value and corresponding to one of the frequency band signals. The power band values are based on estimating, over a time period, the power of one of the frequency band signals. The time period is different for different ones of the frequency band signals. The power band values are used to calculate weighting factors which are used to alter the frequency band signals that are combined to generate an improved communication signal.

  • Publication number: 20060098808
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for processing a received voice signal from a variable-delay network by a communications system that has at least one echo canceller. An echo canceller determines delay characteristics that are associated with the received voice signal and correspondingly modifies echo cancellation processing. In a variation of the embodiment of the invention, a first echo canceller sends silence descriptor information to a second echo canceller. The second echo canceller reconstructs a voice signal based upon the silence descriptor information and excitation vector information.

  • Patent number: 7039181
Abstract: Methods and apparatus compensating for background noise associated with a transmitted signal. In a first embodiment, an adder combines an echo estimate with the the transmitted signal to form a processed signal, a noise reduction circuit uses a background noise estimate to subtract the background noise from the processed signal, and a non-linear processor uses the background noise estimate to combine a compensating background noise signal with the proccssed signal. In another embodiment, the noise reduction circuit divides the processed signal into sub-bands. With variations of an embodiment, the nonlinear processor is a sub-band non-linear processor, the processed signal is divided into sub-bands, and the background estimate includes sub-band noise estimates.

  • Publication number: 20060034166
Abstract: A multi-point communications system that is set forth herein. The communication system comprises a head end unit disposed at a primary site and a plurality of receivers disposed at remote sites. The head end unit includes a transmitter for transmitting OFDM/DMT symbols over a predetermined number of bins across a transmission medium. The OFDM/DMT symbols are transmitted in periodically occurring formatted symbol frames. The cyclic prefix includes a predetermined periodic signal superimposed thereon. The receivers receive the OFDM/DMT symbols over a subset of the predetermined number of bins from the transmission medium and use the superimposed signals to attain symbol alignment.
