  • Publication number: 20070177470
Abstract: A distance measuring device capable of being used in microscopes or other optical systems. Embodiments of the invention employ one or more scanning mirrors to scan a reference beam over a target to be inspected. The reference beam is returned and detected by a photodetector. The reference beam may be created by using a knife-edge element which allows the outgoing reference beam and incoming reference beam to follow the same path so that the apparent motion of the spot on the target surface is not detected by the photodetector. The photodetector generates an electronic signal corresponding to the displacement of the target away from the ideal focal point. The electronic signal may be used to drive a servomechanism to displace either the target or the microscope objective lens to bring the target in focus.

  • Publication number: 20070097837
Abstract: Disclosed are various systems and methods for generating a data signal. In one embodiment, a system is provided that comprises a laser with a gain medium, the laser being configured to emit optical power. The laser is further configured to receive an external optical feedback optically coupled into the gain medium from an optical medium. The external optical feedback is modulated by data embodied in the optical medium. A circuit generates the data signal corresponding to the data based upon a variation in the optical output power of the laser due to the external optical feedback directed into the gain medium of the laser.

  • Publication number: 20060021645
Abstract: A combustor includes a combustor head with an integrated counter-flow heat exchanger. The combustor head defines a combustion chamber and has a surface accessible for external delivery of thermal energy. The counter-flow heat exchanger has a fuel channel extending between a fuel inlet and a fuel outlet coupled to the combustion chamber, an exhaust channel extending between an exhaust inlet coupled to the combustion chamber and an exhaust outlet, and a shared wall between the fuel channel and the exhaust channel for transfer of thermal energy therebetween.

  • Publication number: 20060006250
Abstract: A method of disbursing fine particles in a spray including the steps of providing a liquid carrier having a critical point and fine particles of at least one material. The fine particles are dispersed in the liquid carrier. A supercritical carrier containing dispersed particles is created by driving the liquid carrier containing dispersed fine particles above the critical point. The pressure of the supercritical carrier containing dispersed particles is reduced thereby forming a vapor carrier containing dispersed particles therein. The vapor carrier containing disbursed fine particles is then discharged.
