    Abstract: A large diameter mid-zone air separation cone is provided for decreasing NOx during burner operation by expanding the internal recirculation zone (IRZ) at the burner exit. The mid-zone air separation cone has a short cylindrical leading edge that fits in the outer air zone of a burner. The mid-zone air separation cone splits the outer air zone secondary air flow into two equal or unequal streams depending on the position of the air separation cone with respect to the outer air zone, and deflects a portion of the secondary air flow radially outward. Since the radial position of the air separation cone is farther from the burner centerline, the IRZ size is expanded and NOx emissions are minimized.

    Abstract: An apparatus for separating solids from a solids and gas flow in a combustor having a fluid circulating system uses a plurality of separators adjacently positioned and horizontally spaced in a path of a solids and gas flow. Each separator includes four tubes. A membrane connected between selected tubes creates a concave-shaped configuration that will capture oncoming solids particles entrained within the flue gas. In one embodiment, fluid from the fluid circulating system flows serially from an inlet into a first leading tube of a first separator through the tubes in each separator in a given row and finally through the second leading vertical tube of a last separator in that row to an outlet and back to the fluid circulating system. Connector tubes communicate with the first leading tube and the first rear tube, the first rear tube and the second rear tube, and the second rear tube and the second leading tube.

    Abstract: Mixed waste containing organic constituents and low level radioactive waste is remediated in a circulating fluidized bed combustor. Three separators are used to filter the flue gas and separate fine radioactive material from coarse non-radioactive material thereby concentrating the radioactive portion. A primary separator separates large material such as sand, lime, flyash or unburned fuel particles from the flue gas leaving the furnace of the combustor. The flue gas is then passed to a secondary separator for the collection of finer particles. In turn, the flue gas is passed to a tertiary separator for the collection of the finest particles of the flue gas containing low level radioactive waste. Solids entrained in the primary separator are recycled back into the bed of the combustor through an L-valve. Solids entrained at the secondary separator are also recycled back into the bed.
