    Abstract: A method of analysing a video signal for the presence of outlines to determine whether a frame of the video signal is likely to represent a cartoon is based on the concept that cartoons are often characterised by uniform colours within an image. In an improved version the signal is separated into signals representing smaller areas of the image before analysing each signal for the presence of uniform colours.
